I don't know. I don't put it past Kojima to have made it intentional, if simply for the Japanese predilection for triple punning that the pictographic nature of kanji makes possible. They're extremely fond of wordplay.

And someone on the design team must have had a working knowledge of Russian.

XD As for my crazy statements, I suppose I could have simply said "golova is a synonym for Colonel in Russian, and the only fruit in the game is called a golova"...but what would have been the fun in that?
