If you are even toying with the idea of this, you probably should read this article.
This is not so cool and I think a lot of fanficion writers will take it in the teeth if they go this route.

Thanks to Grey853 for forwarding this to me.

Very good article. This is obviously a move aimed at young people (judging by the rights of the shows being 'purchased' for the writers to use. Some kid will jump at the chance to be published and shoot him/herself in the foot doing it.

Best point - why would someone pay to read something that they are currently getting for free? Ya think?

Very angry because the people that this is desgined to prey upon will get sucked right into this trap. It's up to us to make noise and spread the word to avoid this at all costs. We won't reach everyone, but you do the best you can.

Very eye opening. Who in their right mind would want to get paid most likely a small amount for their stories and have them just taken away for nothing and losing all rights to their original ideas?

Thanks so much for posting this and kudos to you, Grey and Sparky for spreading the word. The initial excitement has worn off very quickly.

There was no excitement on my part, just thinly guised sense of dread of the mass media once again making a move to control fanfic.

Sadly, someone who is desperate for attention, ego boosting, bragging rights, etc. will leap at a chance to say he/she is a published writer without thinking of the consequences further down the road. Only when the fantasy has worn off and the reality settles in will they see the situation for what it truly is - an easy way for a company to steal ideas and characters without future compensation.

Granted there might be some who fall under that category, is as you say, 'desperate for attention, ego boosting, wanting bragging rights etc ( ... )

Sadly, there are many fans who fall under that category and we can only hope by spreading the word to limit the damage. The sad truth is that the gullibility and need to feel important is what drives so many reality shows today.

Thankfully, the 'worlds' purchased so far are mostly aimed at the younger fans and not part of mainstream fandom as we know it (ST,SW,DW, HP, etc.). We can only hope it stays that way as it will be much easier to contain.
