My wife woke me up at about 4:00 am, and said something was wrong. The kettle was missing and the back door was standing open. Then we found her work computer was missing, and my bags with my vestments and liturgical books. It seems that my son forgot to lock the door when he came home from work last night, and the thief would choose the night he ( Read more... )

in this troubling and sad thing to focus
on what might be repairable--
perhaps there is a set of deacon's
vestments somewhere that could be
borrowed? even if illfitting...all
you really need is the orare I should
think...would not an alb(for that
matter available in churches of other
communion or goods shops)+ an orare
do it fairly well?

I've asked out bishop, though he's away at the moment. He has a store of such things that people in other countries (mainly Greece) donate when they get new sets of vestments. The problem is that it happened so close to Holy Week.

I wonder what the street value of vestments and liturgical books might be? How much crack could I buy with the Roman Missal? Hmm...

One of the books that went was Hapgood's Service Book, which was the only English version I had for the Litiya. And replacing it will cost about R400.00, but it would really be of little use to a casual thief.

Another is a little brown Vespers book from St Tikhon's monastery, costs about R80.00, but odering such things is such a schlep. One has to find the price, go to the bank to get a bank draft, go back a week pater to collect it, and so on. And the Reader's Service Book, which we printed ourselves, and the one that went was the last copy we had, very tattered, but it had all the corrections marked for the new printing, and the proof reading is best done in the services themselves. It's only when actually singing the Psalms that you really notice the typos.
