A couple of weeks ago my son, who works in a bookshop, came home with a book The big ugly monster and the little stone rabbit. He made some comments about what he thought was the undeserved popularity of The da Vinci code, and said he thought The big ugly monster and the little stone rabbit was far better, and that it was literature ( Read more... )

Book 6 of HP starts of badly, I think... but by the last third it's as good as any of the others.

Yes, I've now finished Harry Potter 6, and I think it's better than the previous two, once it gets going.

I think both HP5 and HP6 are nowhere near as fun as HP1-4. Well, that's just my opinion and it's not a popular one.

As for the Da Vinci Code, I thought it sucked. It was so obviously inaccurate that it was laughable. I guess I have my 12 year Convent education to thank for not being sucked in by 'bad history'.

I think the fans of Da Vinci would rather believe bad history than the truth because the truth is way harder to live with.

Actually, the first two chapters of HP6 were my least favourite... I enjoyed the book a lot, and I hope you do too. :)

Having just finished Harry Potter and the half-blood prince, I think The da Vinci code is inferior in just about every way. HP 6 surpasses it in popularity, is better written, has a better plot, and has better characters.

If you regard both as mystery novels, then Rowling succeeds in keeping the reader guessing -- at least this reader. In The da Vinci code the only thing that keeps one guessing is how long it is going to take the characters, one of whom is a "cryptography expert" to spot some of the more obvious clues.

I'm holding off on HP6 for now. I'm going on vacation in August so that may be a good time to start it. Then again, I might start LOTR again for the umpteenth time!
