Dead or Sleeping?

I'd like to take a quick poll.
How many of you thought, like I did, that when you first read that horrible, awful little sentence, that Remus and Tonks were actually only sleeping? I don't know what stopped me and prompted me to go back, but I did, and after re-reading it about 3 times and it SLOWLY starting to sink in, the waterworks began.
To me, it was just adding insult to injury. Not only were the deaths of my two favourite characters revealed in such a seemingly-offhand way, but misunderstanding the sentence on top of all that... Cruel.

My initial thought was, "Oh phew, they're with the injured people, not the dead people",
That was my exact reaction too. I had to read the line a couple more times before I realized that they were actually dead. It just wasn't well-worded at all.

I was looking for them on the page as Harry was looking for them in the Great Hall. I found their names - saw that they looked peaceful - and breathed a great sigh of relief. I was excited and went back reading; they were safe!
Then I read the actual sentence. "No, no, no... They're sleeping," I said aloud. Read it again, and I swear my heart stopped.
I do agree that it was a cruel way to kill them - so much worse than Sirius who simply fell through a mysterious veil.

That's the worst thing for me: I was so shocked and numb that I couldn't cry. I wanted to, but I was so numb... I wasn't able to cry for another 8 or so hours.

That's how I felt too. I didn't manage to cry until the next morning when I read Fernwithy's fic "Pointless" and that set me off. And then I started work on a denial fic of my own to try and fix canon with disrupting it, which is something I swore I'd never do but am now finding a necessary challenge...

I know what you mean; many people who go against canon have been somewhat of an annoyance to me - depending on what it is.
This won't be the first time that I've brought characters back from the grave, but there's something about having to do it for Remus and Tonks that makes it seem..... I dunno. It's just weird. I never thought I would have to, but now that they're gone, I feel compelled to do it. - It's more than just an agitating plot bunny.

I thought the same thing. :(
Once I realized they were dead, and took 15 minutes to cry my eyes out, I knew I couldn't really deny it. As much as I just wanted them to be stunned, anybody could have revived them in an instant. Sigh.

Unfortunately, not me. When he said that they looked like they were sleeping I immediately had an image flash in my head of those old Victorian pictures of the dead with their hands folded on their stomachs, their eyes sort of sunken in their skulls with sallow looking skin. Harry's reaction just confirmed that they were dead.

Would she be that cruel? I think on current evidence, I'm inclined to think yes.
