I think it's better to make a complete arse of yourself and be rejected, than not say anything at all and miss the chance.

I know that's not this situation, but still :P

But the reason you didn't act on it is because you're a loyal person, who does the right thing x

It was. I like that I did what was the right thing at the time.
But it hurts so much to know that I never even found out if there was a chance.

I can accept it and move past it, but now and again I will always feel it. It's not often you feel so strongly about someone that you are prepared to fundamentally change your life to be with them...

Yes.
But having loved and lost is a horrible pain and only a metaphorical benefit.

When she left it felt like someone ripping my heart out, blending it into a smoothie, putting it into a spiked shape container and piercing my head with it repeatedly. I have never felt anything like it. Not even being cheated on and separating from my wife hurt as much as that did.
