What are you reading?

Just curious. Respond here or in your own LJ. (Does this mean, I'm starting a meme?)

My answer's a little complicated:

Audiobook: I finished Hyperion a few hours ago while cleaning my car. I liked it so much, I just downloaded The Fall of Hyperion, but I haven't started it yet.

Regular Book: The Somnambulist, which I think I've posted about ( Read more... )

Just finished Beaufort. Good book. On a trivial level, it reminded me to be glad I didn't grow up during a war. More deeply that being close to combat messes people up.

Reading The User of Weapons (Banks) and Spook Country (Gibson). I like the Culture books, so I'm enjoying TUoW. I picked up the Gibson 'cause I was in an airport and needed something to read on the flight. It was a mistake. He used to be good, but this one just seems to be a mash of nerdy culture reference.

Oh, and I just read through the recent Iron Fist series. That was fun even if I wasn't a big fan of the art.

One of these days I need to read The Immortal Iron Fist in trade.

Also, I think I finally figured out who you are! ^_^ I had to look at barking_inguana's profile for context and then it clicked. I'm now pretty sure I've seen you use this username in some other context before.

You probably have. :)

If you haven't read them by the summer, I can bring the 3 down to the beach.

That would be swell, as I almost certainly won't have read them by then.

I have about ten books partially read--I don't know when that became a habit. Up until a year ago it drove me crazy not to be done with one book before picking another up.

The only fiction I have in process is Palimpsest" by Catherynne Valente. So lyrically written--and I've learned a few new words, which I love. It isn't a book that can be read quickly, it's more of an absorption process.

Other than that, I have several books on buddhism, meditation and reiki going.

Just started Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series. Not expecting much and so far it's delivering. "Coraline" is on-deck.

And, as always, I have to pimp "The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch. "Ocean's Eleven" meets "Pirates of the Caribbean" in a fantasy setting. Great writing and a really fun read.

I have owned a copy of The Lies of Locke Lamora for quite some time and was considering making it my next book. Though I really, really, really want to get back into the Amber series, too.

The Sex Lives of Cannibals. It's a travelogue about a couple that moves to Kiribati (equatorial pacific) and the interesting/odd things that occur.

"Deadhouse Gates" by Steven Erikson. Amazing book. And part of an amazing series.

And Hyperion was a great book. I read it in the 90's sometime, and I still remember small chunks of it. Never got the other books. Feel free to say if they are good or not.

I heard about the Erikson series from tfbretz and have been thinking about picking it up.

I don't know about the other Hyperion books yet, but I'll start the second one tomorrow.

I really, liked Hyperion. I really, really like the first bit -- the part about the priest. For whatever reason though, it went downhill from there for me. Hope it holds up better for you.

I liked all of the bits, then I thought the last pilgrim's tale was kind of dull at first...until I got to the huge "punchline."
