Ch. 2
“Andrea” Miranda called from inside her study. Andy took a deep breath, hung up the dry cleaning and walked with the book towards the study. The sight took her breath away. Miranda curled up in a comfortable leather chair wearing her glasses and a simple spaghetti strap shirt and jeans, all designer naturally. “I want you to sit in on the Dior meeting tomorrow. I will expect a full report when you get back, Andrea.” Miranda said and extended her hand for the book. Andy smiled as bright as she could and handed Miranda the book. Their fingers brushed and Andy felt a jolt of electricity shoot through her body and she did her best not to gasp. “Is there anything else I can do for you Miranda?” Andy asked and Miranda looked up at her. “I want you to give me some background information on Susan Orlean. I am aware that she used to work for the New Yorker, and I am also aware that she has written several books, including the Orchid Thief. I don’t want childhood memories or anything like that brought up. I just want some information on her career and her rise up the ladder that I do not already know.” Miranda said.
Andy nodded her head. “I’ll get right on that.” Andy held her breath, it was time to take a leap and hope and pray that she wasn’t fired for it. She moved closer to Miranda. “That’s A…” Andy cut Miranda’s train of thought off by bending down and kissing her softly on the cheek. “Good Night Miranda, I hope you sleep well.” Andy whispered in her ear and Miranda gasped, and blushed. Andy stood up straight and backed up slightly to wait for any oncoming verbal threats, but they never came. Miranda sat looking up at her struck with wonder. Finally she shook her head and regained her composure. “Yes, good night” Miranda said. Andy smiled and then turned and walked out of the study and out the door.
Roy opened the car door for her to take her home and Andy sat silently in the backseat trying not to grin like an idiot. “She didn’t fire me, and she blushed. All good signs that I can move forward with my plans.” Andy thought to herself and sighed. “If only I didn’t have to worry about Susan Orlean getting in the way.”
9:00 a.m. RUNWAY
Miranda sat at her desk typing up an email to Donatella about her summer line and how she would like it to be featured when she sneezed. She looked into her outer office and noticed that Emily had gone to the bathroom and that Andrea was at her desk typing away, updating the schedule no doubt. Then she saw a delivery man approach Andrea’s desk, with a whole bouquet of freesias. Miranda narrowed her eyes and sneezed again.
Andy smelled them before she saw them. She held back her devious smirk and looked up in time to hear Miranda begin to sneeze and a delivery man to say “Flowers for Miranda Priestly.” Andy feigned shock upon seeing the flowers and widened her eyes. “I’ll take them” she said quickly and tipped the guy. As soon as he had turned and left Andy took the flowers and quickly dashed to the trashcan outside of Miranda’s office area and threw them away. When she came back in she grabbed a box of tissues, and some Tylenol sinus, and walked into Miranda’s office. She handed Miranda the Kleenex, got Miranda a bottle of water and handed her the Tylenol and the water. “Here you go” Andy said and noticed that Miranda looked rather impressed and, almost, grateful.
“Andrea who sent those horrid things?” Miranda said after she had downed the Tylenol. “Before I threw them away the note said they were from Susan Orlean, Miranda.” Andy said. “The cardinal rule around here is NO freesias, and yet she sent them to me. I don’t care if she is my boss that is unacceptable.” Miranda said and sneezed again. “I have not found anything interesting enough to show you about her background yet, but I’m using a few old sources of mine and I should have some information for you soon.” Andy said and Miranda nodded her head. Her lips were pursed and Andy immediately recognized the signs of Miranda’s impending mood change. Emily hobbled back into the office on her crutch and Miranda barked “Emily tell the art department that I want the sketches of those designs finished within the hour, then call James Holt and let him know that until his designs resemble something other than that of Wal-Mart that we will not be featuring his designs in RUNWAY. Then inform Nigel that the proofs he sent me this morning are appalling, is it too much to ask for a color other than pink to be used? Am I reaching for the stars?” Miranda said and then turned towards Andy. “Andrea, Starbucks, that’s all.” Miranda said and Andy turned around and headed out of the offices.
9:30 a.m.
Andy made it to Starbucks and the floral shop and back in less than fifteen minutes. She was proud of herself it was a record. She walked into the office and laid the flowers down on her desk. Then she walked into Miranda’s office and placed the coffee on her desk and left, as Miranda was busy looking through the sketches she had demanded with Nigel. Andy picked up the flowers and noticed that Emily was looking at her with spite and curiosity. She went into the kitchen area, pulled out a nice vase and arranged the flowers artfully in the vase and then put some water in it. When Andy made it back to the outer offices Nigel was leaving with his head down. Andy grimaced. Miranda had obviously hated the drawings because of her sour mood. Andy felt bad knowing that it was her fault but she hoped that this would make up for it.
Miranda rubbed her temple and looked up to see her Andrea…
“Wait…her Andrea? When did she become her Andrea? That’s not right” Miranda thought
She saw the arrangement of ghost orchids and lilies that Andrea held and her eyes widened. “Andrea who are those from?
Andy turned around and noticed that Emily had gone into the kitchen and so she turned around and smiled and said “they are from me Miranda.” “The flowers are from you?” Miranda asked almost disbelievingly. “Yes, they are from me Miranda. I figured that having your favorite flowers here would help to make up for the mishap earlier.” She said bravely. Andy came and set them down on the corner of Miranda’s desk. “Andrea, I have never told anyone my favorite flowers.” She said and glared at her. “Back in Paris, when I saw you that night in your hotel room, when you uncrossed your legs and reached out for the seating chart I saw a flash of a very elegant tattoo made up of ghost orchids and lilies. Don’t worry I haven’t told anyone and I will not tell anyone. I just thought I would do something nice for you.” Andy said and Miranda looked at her stunned. “Andrea when you bring the book and dry cleaning to my house tonight I want you to have all the information you find on Susan Orlean. We will go over it tonight. That’s all.” Miranda said and Andy turned to leave
As she left Miranda could not help watching her Andrea’s ass.
“Yes, my Andrea” Miranda thought
Everyone at RUNWAY seemed puzzled, but grateful that Miranda’s mood seemed to shift and lighten for the rest of the day. Everyone except Andy and Nigel, “Six I sense your doing here.” Nigel said and Andy grinned. “Yep, Susan’s flowers arrived, put her in a bad mood, and then I swooped in and saved the day with a bouquet of flowers she would actually like.” Andy said. Nigel grinned. “I can’t believe Susan didn’t at least check with anyone else to find out whether or not Miranda liked freesias, then again, I’m positive she assumed Miranda’s reliable assistant would give her the correct information. I wonder what she is going to do when she learns her gift was trashed. Was there a card?” Nigel asked. “Yes there was, it said ‘I look forward to working with you Miranda, and I hope our relationship will be not just professional, but personal as well. Would you like to have dinner?’” Andy finished and Nigel grinned. “So Miranda is unaware that there are two different women vying for her affections. For that matter Susan is unaware of the fact that you are going to destroy every attempt of Susan’s to get close to Miranda. You are playing dirty, and I’m loving it!” Nigel said and grinned.
9:30 p.m.
Miranda paced her study waiting on Andrea to arrive with the book, her dry cleaning, and the information on Susan. Well as far as she was concerned the information on Susan could go to hell at the moment. “I’m a 48 year old woman, and I have just realized that I have feelings for my very young second assistant. God, I’m turning into my ex-husband, and my soon to be ex-husband” Miranda said and huffed. What bothered her most was that she could not get the feeling of Andrea’s lips on her skin off of her mind, nor the fact that Andrea had gone out of her way to restore her good mood today by buying her, her favorite flowers. Miranda heard the front door open. It’s time. “Andrea” Miranda called. She heard her hall closet door shut and then she heard the thud of Andrea’s shoes against her hardwood floors as she drew closer and Miranda held her breath…TBC
