Yaaay! I am so happy to hear all this.. i was worried a bit that this would happen when you shared that epic tutorial, and gave away so much information in the leather working group on DeviantArt... But i know you will always be the best in my mind, and i am very excited to see what new ideas you come up with!
I have made my very first leather mask with the help of your tutorial, just a few weeks ago... I learned a lot just working with the medium. Like, carving is -not- my forte.. i have tendon problems in my hands... and i have nooo idea how to get a good muzzle shape. but i am still supremely grateful because with out your tutorial i wouldn't have ever had the courage to try. So, thank you so much! :)
You have an awesome ability to bounce back from difficulties and frustrations and turn it into positive energy--I am really excited about seeing your new projects as you continue to push yourself in new ways! It is going to be amazing!
I loved your tutorial, and I did use some of your tips to make an SCA coronet. I don't have the $$ to get tooling tools (hee hee, tooling tools!) or a lot of the other nifty devices you use. I faked it with paint, a dull awl, and it came out ok... except I didn't seal it well enough, so it got wet, and shrank again, and now it's too small... ;p But anyway, while I'm all for sharing techniques, I'm also all for supporting oneself. So I look forward to see what you come up with next.
Hey there! I know this is an old post but I stumbled upon it. (I'm Ashley from OakMyth on dA and Etsy, fellow maskmaker!)
I just wanted to let you know, my business partner and I stumbled upon leather mask making completely on our own. She had been working with leather for 10 years or so (when she was in her teens!) and I had been painting since infancy haha. Anywho, it wasn't until after we combined our skills into mask making that we stumbled upon your work. And while we -love- your work and style, our methods are very different. We use a generic looking manequin head to shape our masks, and we dry with a blow dryer as opposed to your oven method. We also use 4oz as well as 8oz, and do some cutting on a laser cutter.
Anywho, I just wanted to clear the air in case there were any hard feelings or something. :) Cheers!
