Dear Firefox,

If I can't tell what tab is the active one, then you've made the look of your tabs too minimal.

Now I have to go & download a third party theme to make the browser usable.

I am MacOs. And it's never been a red X. Always a gray X, the same color as the background tab.

However! It's now working properly again after I tried downloading a theme, decided it was horrific, and went back to the default.

How odd.
