Thoughts and a song

Hello! I am back from a long weekend up that the cottage, and have not caught up on the flist at ALL. Also, last week it were my birthday! It was pretty rad. I got money for nicer cookware and a book and antique-couch-shaped ringholder thingy which is cool. And chocolate. And I may have bought myself a present of a more personal nature with some of ( Read more... )

Oh, amusing! I just picked up Austra's new album but have yet to listen. The Beast is totally reminiscent of the Final Fantasy theme, thank you for point that out.

I quite like the album... a couple songs are same-y on first listen, but all lovely.

I was really struck by the parallels between the way Castiel relates to Dean in late season 6, and the way Sam was with him late season 4.

'I trust you. Every time I trust you. This time, just once, can't you trust me?' Sam and/or Castiel to Dean

'I know what I'm doing. This is the only way to save the world.' Sam and/or Castiel to Dean

Dean, of course, says no. 'You can still be my brother, but you have to do what I say.'

And by the time Dean changes his mind, says you're family no matter what, it's too late.

Y/N?

Oh, quite. When shit gets real, Dean definitely reverts to that my way or the highway kind of tactic -- but unlike John I think he is far more sensitive to the rejection of his ultimatums. Different damage there entirely.

And I may be making shit up, but I really see more of a craving for Dean's help/approval in Castiel (it's hard to see through his, uh, unique modes of self-expression, though, so I may just be getting 'ship on it). Sam wanted to get out, get revenge, be right, and Dean can be mad all he wants, but Sam's going to go ahead alone. He got bounced back hard, but this season he's coming to terms with himself, so we'll see if he gets back any of that drive. I think he will ( ... )

the guilt-trip would have gotten more traction if Dean had given him any indication that he gave a crap what Cas was up to or wanted to help.

Seriously! The extent of Dean's helpfulness on that was that bit in the Impala where he asked Cas if he would come to them for help if he got in real trouble. And Cas responded with a shifty "Yeah, of course" kind of thing and ran away. And Dean reacted by getting extra suspicious but not actually trying to help. Awesome! Sigh.

Right?! Cas WAS being a shifty bastard, but Dean wasn't encouraging him to open up by being all suspicious mcjudgeypants all the time. And even when all Cas was saying was that he was busy fighting a damn war, did Dean ask if he could help? About what was going on up there that had Cas so run-around? Nooooooo.

I mean, it's not like Dean didn't know Cas is kind of ~special~ could be prone to Bad Life Choices(tm), and now instead of stoned hippy Cas he's got high-on-souls megalomaniac Cas. Fun times.

Awww, I think you are absolutely right about Cas being the unloved child. First God ditches him and there's that civil war business and THEN the Winchesters bail on him too? OUCH. It doesn't help that he credits DEAN with teaching him about independence, for all the good that does when Dean turns into a dick about it.

The last few episodes, I was seriously expecting Cas to pull some of that badass Angel of the Lord stuff with Dean, to basically remember when he used to have a backbone, y'know? Lately he has just been Dean's hapless sidekick/punching bag, and I don't know how Dean didn't realize that's not cool. I mean, I do. Because he's Dean. BUT STILL. So, I dunno, at least Cas isn't a pushover anymore? *sobs*

He got along well enough when he had faith God was SOMEWHERE, but then basically got told God didn't and probably never had given a crap about him or his eons of dutiful angelhood. So then there's Dean, who's got more issues than National Geographic, betrayed Cas' faith in him, ignored him whenever, and then proceeded to respect him not at all. I mean, did Dean ever, out loud, thank Castiel for getting him out of Hell and then dying twice for him?

And then Sam wouldn't even hug him.

Too bad Cas was too distracted to give Dean the same well-earned rant that Bobby did about what a selfish ass he can be. I REALLY wanted him to tell Dean to fuck the fuck off in the ep where they killed Eve. He certainly had a look on his face like he was about to.

Alas. Sam's starting to approach his epic baggage, will season 7 bring some self-access for Dean? I hope so.

SERIOUSLY. You'd think that would be the kind of thing one would notice! I was re-watching some season 4 the other day, and remember that scene in Bobby's kitchen? When Dean was being snarky and Cas gave him that whole "You should show me some respect" speech. Dean was like, COWERING by the end of that. Now he's just like, "Whatever, it's just Cas, I can treat him like crap." Oh man, I forgot about Bobby's rant, that was good stuff. Dean clearly needs to hear it more often, though.

I'm just having a hard time being optimistic about season 7. Like you said in your other comment, Dean Winchester pulling his head out of his ass is kind of our only hope. SCARY TIMES. Remember when stoned hippie Cas was the worst possible outcome? Ahh, those were the days.

Meantime, I am collecting podfic and pretending everything is fine, lalala!
