For one thing this might not be the best season. Stuff is happening all the time there but I think there tends to be more changeover in high summer (because, my theory goes, people graduate and move, then leases are in units of years, so that it's a cascading effect of summer moves). If you don't wanna abandon the idea, you might have better luck if you get a bit of work nearby and save up until the summer, but that'd be a while to hold out. So not a suggestion, just a thought.
One of my friends in Boston (who actually is also named Meredith) got back to me with some tips in her field, which I don't know would apply to you, but I'll forward you what she said.
My moirail and I have been talking about forming a fandom island commune for ages. If we get around to it I'll let you know. There will be scones.
