I think you did the right thing. Some people would just assume (they don't know what AS is) that you were some odd-ball mental case and all their interactions with you would be flavored by their miss-conceptions.
I think it is much better to tell someone in conversation so that you can explain what it is. And also how it effects you.
Of course at the end of the course when everybody knows you to some extent, that is when it would make a good part of the presentation. As in "see I have (AS) and this is how I have dealt with it in the time we have known each other.
Where I think it would have made a good part of your presentation is something like going through chemo for cancer. Because they would be seeing the physical effect on you.
