'Think Of The Children' - Enough Of This Bullshittery!

Jun 12, 2011 14:23

It's been a long time since I entered a post on this journal. Life really has been flinging me around in new directions, and, as a result of my absence, I'm more than certain some of you will have suspected that I'd left this to whither on the dust-ridden shelf of the internet. But there's always one thing that's guaranteed to haul me back here - ( Read more... )

Oh, for Pete's sake! Seriously? It was two blokes with no shirts on in a bed having a smooch! It wasn't a committed man rolling around on a nightclub floor with his mother's ex-husband's ex-wife. It wasn't a woman running from the police stopping to have a fast shag with a married bloke on the hood of the car in public while their baby daughter watched. I had hoped we were past 'think of the children' (except in the case of that Ryan/Stacey scene because EWWWW!).

My daughter - now ten - has a newly discovered love for Eastenders. She did have questions when we began watching together and one of her first was 'Are those two men in love?'. I said yes and she shrugged and went back to watching. (She's equally as disgusted by all the snogging on the show.) But then, we've always told her that love is love.

seriously? I've got an 8 year old and I'd rather let him see that than the shooting in the club that happened a few months ago on Eastenders and that he saw (at my mother in laws) - I don't let him watch Eastenders because of that violent scene

Chryed, for the reasons you've outlined, is a non-issue for me (my mother in law would have more problem with this scene than she had with the shooting... but is okay with adultery in het couples or for him to see the violence, it seems, which is also against her faith)

It is depressing that we still live in a world where it is totally ok to show meaningless violence, cruelty, abuse and general ugliness but as soon as there is love(in another form than what the holier than thou crowd deems right), it gets protested against because it would harm the children.I don't get it, and I hope there are a lot of people that don't get it. I wish those people would speak up.
Now I am going to stare at your wonderful icon and get my mind to a better place.

Couldn't agree with you more. I work with teenagers and they cope. It should be simply done as you say. Love is love no matter who. I thought the scene was great.

I've actually thought of another way of looking at this scene. According to canon, Ianto came out to his mother at 14. It's highly likely that he came out to Rhi at about the same time or earlier. His 'it's not men, it's him and only him' could be his way of reassuring Rhi that yes, he still likes the ladies.

There's also the fact that Rhi might want a lot more of the gory details that Ianto is willing to divulge when there is a kid in the room. My brother and I have shared stuff that we would NEVER want to talk about in 'mixed company'.
