I have a mental disability myself. And a lot of people aren't willing to work with us and have preconceptions about us. They think we aren't as able. And I believe people like you know better than most people that we are able. And we can do a lot more than most people think we can. That is what makes you a great person. And I just want you to know that.
I have seen so much good come from kids who were given up on... it's the reason I fought for Julia, who is deaf-blind-mobility impaired and thought to be hopelessly retarded. But she can communicate, she can learn, and she wants to be loved and appreciated like anyone else. I went to two 10-plus-hour IEP meetings for her because I believed she was worth something... she IS worth something. If I know this and I can't do anything to change or expedite circumstances, what good am I? I was given my many, many blessings for a reason - and maybe that reason is to be an advocate.
There are a lot of reasons I love these kids, some of which I cover in my blog and some of which are known only to me, but if I can know that I helped just one of them, then my life was better for it.
I am just one person who found that she survives best when she has the chance to serve others, to try to change things, to have things to fight against, to get angry about... I am just one person who works better as an advocate.
