Author: memory777
Pairing: Ten/Ianto (hints of Jack/Ianto)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Ianto helps the Doctor stop aliens from invading Cardiff.
Disclaimer: RTD and the BBC own all these characters, I'm just borrowing them.
Authors Notes: I know this isn't perfect. I don't think I've got the voices down properly, although I did try. This is the first part of my series, but you'll have to read to see what it's about. It references my previous fic A Smile Is All It Takes in several  places. There isn't a ton of slash in this part, although there will be quite a bit more in the coming chapters.

---------Passport to the Galaxy--------

It was just another normal day at Torchwood Three. Jack was up in his office, transfixed to his computer screen. Toshiko was busy tapping away at her keyboard, filing in new medical information Owen had recently discovered about the weevils. Gwen looked extremely bored, sat at her desk and munching on a cookie with four empty coffee mugs on her desk. Owen was in the medical bay, re-arranging the ornaments on the shelf. As for Ianto Jones - he was making coffee. For the fifth time this morning.
It was only quarter to twelve and Gwen had already drunk through four cups of coffee. Owen had barely sipped on his first and Toshiko was still on her second. As for Jack, lord knows what he was sipping on.

Ianto made coffee because it was the only thing that could tear him away from his thoughts. His thoughts of his recent encounter with the Doctor. The very same Doctor he had been taught to distrust back at his two year period with Torchwood One. Everything about the encounter felt so wrong… but Ianto liked wrong. Jack was wrong - It was wrong that he should live forever. Lisa had been wrong - It was wrong that she was not a pure human. The Doctor just seemed to fit the trend of Ianto’s love life. If you could call it that - with Jack it was just the occasional shag.

Ianto’s mind had wandered back to these thoughts for a bit too long… the coffee was already going cold. Cursing under his breath, Ianto picked up the coffee and placed it on Gwen’s desk. “Ah thanks Ianto, you’re a star.” Gwen offered a smile up at the Welshman, but Ianto was already gone, off to his own desk to have a good read of his book. Frowning, Gwen opened a window on her computer - a chatbox. Only three people were online as you were only logged on if your computer was on.

Gwen quickly typed in a message, hitting the keys hard enough for Ianto to glance at her. She ignored his look, pressing the enter button to send the message.

Up in Jack’s office, a window in his taskbar glowed orange several times before he noticed. Jack clicked on it and skim reads the message - “What’s up with Ianto, he’s gone broody again?”

Rolling his eyes, Jack typed a message back and returned to whatever he was looking at before. “Stop worrying Gwen, I’m sure he’s fine.”

By this time, Tosh had opened the chatbox and read the contents. “He has been a bit distracted these past few days” she typed in.

Jack’s face told a different story to what he had written. Ianto had refused to be in the same room as Jack for more then a minute, and Jack had no clue what he had done wrong. It wasn’t as if he was away for long on his short journeys with the Doctor. Jack looked back on the screen, he had camera footage open. And the camera was trained on Ianto, who was completely oblivious to the spying his Captain was doing. Sighing, Jack shut down the computer.

CRASH!

Gwen almost fell out of her chair as the ground shook below them, making the coffee mugs shatter across the floor, one of them spraying coffee all under Gwen’s desk. Owen had attempted to steady the shelves packed with medical equipment - instead, the entire shelf had fallen on top of him. Tosh’s chair had broken from underneath her and she fell to the ground with a crunch. The glass in Jack’s office exploded inward, but the time displaced Captain managed to duck below his desk before any of it hit. Not that it would matter anyway. Gwen looked over to check on Ianto - but he was gone. “Anyone seen Ianto?” she called out.

Not even Jack, who could see pretty much the whole Hub from his office, could spot him. Without warning, Toshiko called out “I’ve found him!”

Everyone rushed over to Tosh, who was at her computer. On her screen played camera footage from above the Hub in the Roald Dahl plass, were Ianto stood. The team (and Ianto) were transfixed by the sleek, silver space ship hovering over Cardiff. Jack hesitated for only a second.

A second later he was at the Hub door, entering the code fiercely - but it wasn’t working. Gwen was already at the lift, pushing the large red button on the side of the wall that controlled the lift. Nothing happened. The invaders had Torchwood Three locked inside their own base.

Toshiko was still at her screen. “Guys, you better come look at this.” She said, sounding extremely worried. Reluctantly, Jack and Gwen left the doors and returned to the computer. As soon as she saw the screen, Gwen’s hands flew to her mouth.

The aliens were open firing on Cardiff.

Up above the Hub, Ianto stood transfixed as the large ship hovered over Cardiff, belting out blasts of red hot energy. Surprisingly, none of them came near the plass and Ianto was left unharmed, staring up at were the sky should be. “Are you going to stand there all day?”

Ianto’s gaze was drawn to the familiar voice to his left. It seemed that a small police box from the 1950’s had randomly parked itself in front of the Water Tower. It wasn’t just any police box; Ianto knew exactly what it was - The TARDIS. The Doctor had half-in, half-out of the door, grinning. “Come on!” he called out and stepped back inside, leaving the door open for Ianto.

The Welshman didn’t waste a second, he was racing towards the TARDIS just as the spaceship trained it’s guns down onto the plass. Ianto could feel the heat on his back as the guns prepared to fire. This wasn’t how he wanted to go out. The TARDIS was just out of reach when Ianto heard a loud screech that told him the aliens had opened fire.
Then, a hand reached out and pulled Ianto into the TARDIS by his tie, slamming the door shut after him.

The members of Torchwood Three watched in horror and countless blasts smashed the plass to pieces. Tears were falling from Gwen’s face and Jack had his arm round her. Even he was close to tears. Toshiko looked terrified, and her thoughts came to a conclusion - There’s no way he could have survived that. Owen patted Jack on the back, before he walked off and collapsed onto the sofa, his head in his hands.

But Ianto had survived. The TARDIS apparently had a deflector shield which was impenetrable according to the Doctor, whose grin hadn’t faded. The two men hadn’t moved since Ianto had entered the TARDIS. They were on the opening ramp and were both on the floor. The Doctor had pulled Ianto so hard the Welshman had toppled on top of him. He could feel Ianto’s breathe on his face and their eyes didn’t stray - it was like they were connected. Then, to break the silence, Ianto leaned down and kissed the Doctor.

The smoke cleared in the plass, allowing Tosh to have a good view. The TARDIS was no-where to be found. Her heart sunk as she looked at the ruins of a once populated city. It would take a long time for Cardiff to recover.

In truth, the TARDIS had not been destroyed, it had merely disappeared during the blast and re-appeared on the spaceship high above the city. The doors swung open and the Doctor stepped out, his coat swirling behind him as he walked and flattened down his hair. Ianto didn’t look much better. His once crisp suit was in creases and his hair was ruffled. Ianto couldn’t help but to grin to himself. The Doctor noticed this and his mouth became a wide smile. “Let’s see who did this shall we?”

The console room was empty. So were the living quarters. So was the firing deck. The entire ship was empty. “Where is everyone?”

The Doctor pulled out a T-shaped instrument from his coat pocket. He looked at it and shook his head. “I don’t believe it!” he exclaimed, grinning like a madman. Ianto frowned at him, waiting for the Doctor to explain. “No-ones been on this ship for a decade!”

Ianto raised an eyebrow in confusion. “I don’t get what you mean, Doctor. If no-ones been on this ship, how come Cardiff just got destroyed?” The Doctor didn’t reply, instead, he jumped down the metallic stairs, two by two. “Allons-y, Ianto Jones!” he called out before he disappeared down the stairs. Ianto smiled and then followed the Doctor down to the lower levels.

After five minutes worth of running through corridors and down flights of stairs, Ianto’s legs began to stop working. He was just about to ask the Doctor where they were going when the Doctor stopped outside a door. Pulling the sonic screwdriver from an inside pocket of his coat, the Doctor forced the locked door open. The duo entered the dark room, slowly and quietly.

“I can’t see a thing!” hissed Ianto when he bumped into the Doctor for the third time. Not that Ianto minded bumping into the Doctor, in fact he liked touching the Doctor, but he could easily fall out of a hole or something just as dangerous. “Shhhh!” said the Doctor as he waved the sonic screwdriver around like a wand. “Aha!” he cried and suddenly the lights came on. In front of him was a large control panel covered in buttons and switches and green lights flashed away at them. “It was the computer, it somehow turned rogue and attacked the nearest city. Things like this happen sometimes. Computers have minds off their own in the future. If they’re badly treated, they go haywire.” muttered the Doctor, as the waved the sonic screwdriver over the control panel. The green lights began to turn to red.

Then, the ship began to violently shake. “Jack doesn’t know we’re on here. They’re probably opening fire on us!” cried Ianto as he looked out of a window in the corridor, down at the city below. “Calm down, we’ll be out of here in a minute!” said the Doctor through barred teeth as he tried to concentrate. The last green light turned to red as Doctor pulled the large switch on the control panel down. “Now, we run!” said the Doctor, grabbing Ianto’s hand and pulling him along with him as the control panel began to hiss.

The ship shook all the time as they made their escape to the TARDIS. The door’s swung open in front of them and the two men threw themselves inside, onto the grated floor once more. Kicking the doors shut, the Doctor burst out with laughter as the TARDIS began to hum, indicating it was moving away. Even Ianto found himself laughing at how easily they escaped certain death.

With Torchwood Three he had never experienced the same adrenaline rush that the others had. But with the Doctor, things were different. Ianto felt like he had helped do something extraordinary.

The Doctor looked over at Ianto and their eyes connected. For several minutes they lay there, staring into each others eyes. Then, the Doctor broke the glance as he pushed himself up and walked over to the control panel. “Do you want to go back to Torchwood?” he asked, not looking at Ianto. The Welshman pushed himself to his feet and grabbed hold of the rail. He hesitated, thinking over the option.

The Doctor knew what Ianto had decided. He began to set the co-ordinates for the Hub again - until he found a hand was on his waist and he could feel hot breath on the back of his neck. Glancing over his shoulder, he grinned when he realized he’d guessed wrong. Ianto was going to stay with him.
