Oh! Oh! I have math homework and a lot of personal anxiety staring me in the face, and I have decided to avoid confronting either one! Also I guess my LJ is all about personal meltdowns and memes these days.

Name a fandom (or character) and I will share my unpopular opinion(s) on the subject. Please don't h8 omg.

You've already done Pirates and I think it is the only fandom we share. Um. Unless you'd like to do Hitchhiker's?

And, uh, if you're needing assistance with either the math homework or the personal anxiety, I am totally here and bored off my ass willing to help! I haven't taken a math class in over a year and I seriously miss it; how big of a geek am I?

... Your sexy Labyrinth icons make me happy in my lower regions, so, LABYRINTH. ... I don't actually know if that counts even vaguely, but HEY.

Or! Or! Cable and Deadpool! (... come to think of it, IS THERE A FANDOM FOR THIS)

So ... Labyrinth, huh. LITTLE DO YOU KNOW.

  • I love Sarah Williams. I LOVE HER. Fandom at large seems to hold the opinion that she is only acceptable so far as she is a convenient avatar for the writer's (and audience's) crush on Jareth, an opinion I feel is TERRIBLE AND UNWANTED. Take your hate away! I HAVE ONLY LOVE INSIDE.

Complaints leveled against her character: she's spoiled, she's arrogant, she's selfish, she's whiny, etc, etc. And you know what? She is spoiled and selfish and arrogant and whiny. She also happens to be fifteen years old.

Very few people seem to remember Sarah is also clever and resourceful, charming and determined, an intelligent and imaginative young woman who totally beat Jareth's ass down. TO HER I GIVE TWO THUMBS UP AND ALSO MY ETERNAL ADORATION.

  • I won't say I don't understand why the fandom is so fixated on the ballroom scene, because I do, but ... I'm still not sure why or how that scene has come to be the defining moment of Sarah's character and Jareth's character, of their relationship and the story ( ... )

  • Building on that last TL;DR block!! My anger with and disappointment in Tokyopop's awful, awful manga sequel - Return to Labyrinth - is not fueled by the wrathful demands of my inner Sarah/Jareth 'shipper (SHE IS RABID AND MUST BE STOPPED!), nor is it fueled by my inherent distaste of painful artwork and mediocre writing, but instead fueled by what those SOULLESS MONSTROSITIES did to Sarah. I hate that she only gets a few pages to go, "OMG MY LIFE IS SO TERRIBLE! BLAH, BLAH, TOBY YOU ARE SO GREAT AND OBVS. A MUCH MORE AWESOME MAIN CHARACTER THAN I WAS, PS NOTICE HOW I AM FRIENDLESS AND ALONE. :(" I hate that they took this movie about a young girl on the verge of adulthood, this movie about a strong, flawed, positive young girl who learns she can't wish away all the difficulties and pain and hard decisions of life, that ultimately she must stand up for herself, that she, too, has power ( ... )

On a roll with my last comment to your Pirates fandom comment, since you didn't really say much about her...

    Calypso/Tia??

Please don't say you hate her and she is an evil bitch ho, because then I would be sad and have to lump you in with all the fanatic Davy fangirls.

That's because I never remember to say half the stuff I want to say! I AIN'T HATIN'.

  • I lovelovelove that Tia Dalma was sexy. I REALIZE THAT SOUNDS KIND OF WEIRD, but it's true. It was excellent to see such a strong, sexually aware woman portrayed in a positive light on-screen.

  • I love, too, that the movies never damn her for being what she is: a goddess, fickle and proud and flawed.

  • It's very, very easy to see why Davy Jones reacted as he did when Calypso failed to come for him at the end of his initial ten-year tenure (although it would be nice if the writers would give us more details! AHEM), but - and this is building on the last note! - though it's understandable, it's never excused, and (to me, at least) it never felt like the writers were blaming Calypso for his actions. The laws and whims of gods and goddesses are beyond the comprehension of man. Davy's actions and reactions were his own.

(It says so, so much when Tia tells him it is her nature and Davy turns away from her.)

  • I've read a number of reviews and comments ( ... )

I thought it was amazing in the movie, when Calypso created the rain and the maelstrom. I thought it really drove home the simultaneous supernatural and natural nature of Calypso, that she is greater than men and ships, that she is the sea itself and they survive her only when she so desires

You know that really famous quote of Davy's that everyone keeps quoting?

"I am the sea!"Let's think on that for a second. There's someone in this series that IS really the sea, and it's NOT Davy. Now THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is what I call foreshadowing done well. Wow, ok? Wow ( ... )

On the storm: I've formed the opinion that Calypso PROBABLY decided not to KILL THEM ALL right then and there because, well. She's a goddess. She's got lots of time in the next FIVE DECADES or uh, however long the lords live to kill them off at her leisure.

Also, THEY'RE PIRATES. ODDS ARE NINETY TO TEN THEY'LL DIE AT SEA ANYWAY.
