Oh! Oh! I have math homework and a lot of personal anxiety staring me in the face, and I have decided to avoid confronting either one! Also I guess my LJ is all about personal meltdowns and memes these days.

Name a fandom (or character) and I will share my unpopular opinion(s) on the subject. Please don't h8 omg.

  • Building on that last TL;DR block!! My anger with and disappointment in Tokyopop's awful, awful manga sequel - Return to Labyrinth - is not fueled by the wrathful demands of my inner Sarah/Jareth 'shipper (SHE IS RABID AND MUST BE STOPPED!), nor is it fueled by my inherent distaste of painful artwork and mediocre writing, but instead fueled by what those SOULLESS MONSTROSITIES did to Sarah. I hate that she only gets a few pages to go, "OMG MY LIFE IS SO TERRIBLE! BLAH, BLAH, TOBY YOU ARE SO GREAT AND OBVS. A MUCH MORE AWESOME MAIN CHARACTER THAN I WAS, PS NOTICE HOW I AM FRIENDLESS AND ALONE. :(" I hate that they took this movie about a young girl on the verge of adulthood, this movie about a strong, flawed, positive young girl who learns she can't wish away all the difficulties and pain and hard decisions of life, that ultimately she must stand up for herself, that she, too, has power--!

And then they turn it into the story of a teenage boy off to take command of a fantasy world from its current, eeevil ruler, AS THOUGH I HAD NEVER READ THIS STORY BEFORE???

NO. GODDAMMIT SARAH IS AWESOME AND STRONG AND CLEVER AND WTF TOKYOPOP. WTF FANDOM. WTF EVERYTHING EVER. I HATE THEM ALL SO MUCH.

  • Naturally I think Jareth is unbelievably fantastic, as hello, I have a pulse, thank you for asking, but I don't ... fixate on him as strongly as the rest of the fandom seems to? He's an excellent character, violent and selfish and inhuman and still sympathetic; his love for (or need to possess) Sarah ultimately destroys him, and let us face facts here, Sarah is kind of awesome so it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that she would turn his world you precious thing. But I don't think he's the dashing, smooth, darkly romantic figure fandom plays him up as. Whatever else he might be - goblin, figment of Sarah's imagination, fallen god, WHATEVER - he remains a savage, selfish dude who demands more than he offers.

Sarah's greatest strength comes when she puts the wellbeing of others before herself. Jareth grows weaker the more obsessed he becomes with winning their gamble - and winning her? - as his interests boil down from what might very well be his purpose to what he wants.

    Um.

    THIS IS JUST AN OPINION.

  • I love Sarah's friends. I love Hoggle and Sir Didymus and Ludo (LUUUUUUDOOOOO) and cowardly Ambrosia, and I wish fandom remembered she loves them as they love her.

  • ANOTHER ISSUE I HAVE WITH THIS FANDOM: 99% of all of the stories use the exact same plot. Sarah returns to Labyrinth! Jareth woos Sarah! Probability of Jareth being "Fae": ALARMINGLY HIGH. BLAH BLAH SMOOCHES AND PAINFUL CHARACTERIZATION; Memlu weeps blood, rends clothes. It's just ... SO DISAPPOINTING, that everything reads like a very poorly written court romance, with Sarah constantly swooning into Jareth's arms.

  • That said, I am totally a Sarah/Jareth 'shipper 4 lyfe. *east side!*

THERE'S PROBABLY MORE, BUT I'M TIRED AND MY HEAD HURTS ps dun h8 me omg.

I *love* Sarah. She's so strong. I would not be averse to reading solo Sarah fic, and guess what there's NONE out there. NONE, DUDE.

Also, there is this absolute predilection in nearly every fandom and fanfic writer in the world to smooth, charming, sweet, madly-in-love 'heroes' out of, um, some pretty sucky people. You know, fascinatingly sucky. Awesomely terrible, flawed character. But, you know. JUST. FRUSTRATING.
