Got a problem? Got an idea? Really want to know how much I hate Sphinx? This is the thread you're looking for.

I've noticed that a few comments that I know exist from the last post aren't showing up on the search. Since I'm one of the Laytononnies, I've noticed it mainly with all the most recent Layton threads and subthreads, but it's likely it's happening to other threads in Post #214 and #215 as well. I search for words that I know are in the threads, and they simply...don't appear in the search.

Thanks for reporting this! LJ stopped sending comment notifications (other than new threads) 10 days ago and just started up again today. The search engine currently uses those to build its database, so there's a big gap in the middle. I'm working on writing the web crawler to go through FFA's flatmeme pages and fill in those gaps as well as old posts, but it's been hard to find time. :(

I'll go ahead and add that to the front page so that people know about the problem.

Search queries including both a pipe character and quotation marks seem to have some issues.
e.g. 1927 results for: hannibal | "bryan fuller"
But when I click on page 2 (or back to page 1 from a different page), +'s get added and the search ignores the OR, treating them as ANDs instead:
59 results for: hannibal+|+"bryan+fuller"+

I'm not sure if this is an issue on my end only -- sorry for bothering you, if so! (And if not, so much sympathy for regex with special characters.)

I see some missing comments in 238 (like the kid loki subthread in fic recs).

Could you link me one of those comments? I just looked through the 238 fic recs thread on FFA and didn't see anything about kid Loki, so it's hard to check the DB. I've got some holes in various posts from missing notifications, but #238 has a normal number of comments.

A lot of posts from the most recent meme post (#242) are.. not showing up on dememe. at all.

Sorry about the late reply. The huge gaps in #242 are because I didn't see the new post until it was mostly done - there are only 912 comments in the db out out of 5038 posted. The only thing I can really do to fix it is finish the archive crawler, but that's turning out to involve patching other people's libraries so it's a pain. It'll happen eventually, but there'll be holes until then. :(

Hello Dememe Nonnie!

I apologize if this is a very basic problem, but I'm encountering an error when searching a ship name with a slash. A search for Alice/Betty displays normally, but when I try to go to the second page of results, I get "Not found". I don't know whether this is new, or how easy/hard it might be to fix. However, on the off-chance it is fixable, I thought I would let you know!

No apologies necessary and it's a known problem - basically when I switched back to Ubuntu all advanced searches broke and slashes started throwing errors on the search daemon side. Upgrading didn't fix anything, nobody seems to have any answers, and I kind of threw up my hands a couple of weeks ago and left it to simmer in case I thought of something. I'm kind of leaning towards moving to a provider who'll let me run openSUSE again since that worked fine. Sorry about the problem, slashes are _clearly_ a really high priority for anything that involves fandom. I'm hacking on the code to let people set persistent filters in another window right now, but when I finish that I'll try running a copy on openSUSE again. Sorry about the inconvenience, this is a pretty core failure!

Hello Dememe Nonny,

Any word on how the fixes are going for the search/caching issue? As an example the following search terms (entered individually, not as a compound statement, obviously) don't return results newer than 7 days: bucky, dememe, agent, x-files.

I pretty much rely on dememe to make FFA usable, because to be honest, it's threaded format doesn't really work for me. Without dememe, I'm not going to be able to participate much on FFA any more. :( I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is, and already contributed a donation (yesterday or the day before, I can't remember what day it was) and will do it again if it helps.

Thanks!
- A nonnie
