[Madoka's at the door! She looks... well, like shit. Her eyes are red and puffy, like she'd been crying, and one of them is heavily bruised on top of that. An even larger one is on her right arm, starting at her wrist and disappearing up her sleeve.

She starts to force a smile, stops, and shifts awkwardly from foot to foot without looking Mami in the eye.]

[The smile that had been on Mami's face falters immediately as she reaches forward, moving to usher the younger girl into her apartment.]

[Madoka's in a hurry to get inside, but definitely not to answer that question.

That said, her body language does a good job of answering it for her. She's huddled, defensive, looking down at the floor, and when she finally looks up it's with the worst fake smile in the history of the world, even without the fact that she's halfway to crying again.]

[Jim doesn't have to be psychic to know something's up. And he's not going to be deterred from helping, if he can. He has too much respect for Charles to let him disrespect himself.

He lingers in the doorway a moment, watching. He knows Charles knows he's there, he has to. When he speaks, it's quiet.]

[ Charles is unsettled. Just -- unsettled. The memories of Erik's touch are still too close, and the sting of Erik's abandonment still strong. Erik was the first person to ever touch him like that, the first person to ever make him shiver apart and collapse and let his barriers completely down. He hadn't told many about it, but Jim -- Jim was one that he felt might understand. That he would know the complexities of desire and hurt.

He stands stiffly by the window, so consumed with his own thoughts that he doesn't even notice when Jim approaches.

He jumps, at the sound of Jim's voice, his heart racing. -- How could he? How could he let his guard down? He can't be helpless. ]

I'm -- it's nothing.

It's Erik.

[Jim's surprised by the start Charles gives. It's not like him. And it means this is emotional, as well as whatever else it might be. That Erik is more than Jim's heard. But he doesn't betray any surprised at the revelation, just steps further into the room. And shuts the door.]
