wee!Mail | Death Note /late but couldn't resist! mightstealyrcar July 2 2011, 01:29:51 UTC
[There's a kid in hand-me-down shorts that are so big on him, they look like pants, but he's not really aware of this, or of his surroundings in general; he's far too absorbed in playing his game. His tongue's poking out the corner of his mouth in concentration.]

< Matt...? >

[No, he has experience with a younger version of him, knows he won't respond to that name.]

< Mail, how long have you been here on your own? > [Elfangor would have asked when did you become so young again, but expects he wouldn't have an answer for that.]

[Mail's so used to being called the wrong name, it barely even registers anymore.

But he's never been called the wrong name by someone like this, and Mail stares, game forgotten, not even noticing the tinny descending scale that plays when his guy dies.

Whoever... whatever this is, he doesn't strike Mail as scary. Okay, the tail's kind of scary. But he's fuzzy, and those extra eyes are cool.

Mail's still keeping his distance for now.]

How. ...how d'you know my name?

[How do you explain to someone that they end up dating an alien when they grow up? The simple answer is, you don't.

So Elfangor puts it in as child-friendly terms as possible.]

< It might seem to you as though I am from your future, and that would not be inaccurate. It seems you have been... reverted to a much younger age than usual. We are actually very close when you're a grown-up. >

[He notices Mail is keeping his distance, and while it gives him a pang in his hearts, he is quite aware that it is likely wise that he be so cautious around perceived strangers.]

You're from my future?

[Mail stares even more now, but wait, that's not exactly what the blue guy said.]

Only you're not, I'm already grown up? [Mail tips his head, studying both pairs of eyes, and that tail, which is actually kind of awesome. He goes a little closer.]

What am I like? How old am I? How did we meet? What's your name?

...do you get mad if people pet you? [He hunches his shoulders. He didn't really mean to ask that last one.]

[Elfangor can't help but to laugh. So many questions at once!]

< My name is Elfangor. We met in... I suppose you could call it a parallel world. I'm not sure if it is possible to age there, but when you arrived you were nineteen. > [How to parse down what Matt is like without giving too much away of their relationship? He smiles with his eyes and settles on,] < You turn out to be quite an amazing person. >

[When Mail asks that last question and immediately withdraws, Elfangor is quick to reassure him.] < I am not accustomed to most people touching me, but you are certainly allowed. >

[To prove this, he reaches out to take hold of Mail's hand, and he can't help but to marvel at how tiny he is.]

[Mail instantly blushes bright red, because touching, and 'cause... amazing, him? For real?]

Are you sure you're talking to the right Mail?

[He doesn't pull his hand away, though. He even stretches his fingers out to compare. Elfangor's are so much longer, and fuzzy. Mail forgets his embarrassment enough to giggle.]

You've got lotsa fingers! How d'we get to a parallel world? Where'd you start out at? You're totally an alien. [He grins. This is awesome.]

[He always thinks Matt is cute when he blushes, but this is a whole other level of adorable. Notably, a level of cute that does not in any way involve more, ah, adult activities.]

< I'm absolutely certain I am. > [He wiggles his fingers against Mail's, trying to get another giggle out of him.]

< I do not know how it all works, honestly. I was from another world entirely, but I am glad to have been brought to that parallel world. Otherwise, I would not have gotten the chance to meet you. >

[He just can't resist any longer--he scoops Mail up and plops him down on his back, and twists his stalk eyes back to wink at him.] < All right back there? >

[It works; Mail laughs again.

Then he lets out a sound embarrassingly like an 'eep' when Elfangor picks him up and settles him on his back, but he doesn't object. He instinctively slips his arms around his chest to hang on. Ooh, fuzzy.

He's still not really sure Elfangor has the right Mail in mind, and feels a little weird, like maybe Elfangor has somehow been fooled into thinking Mail is cooler than he really is.]

Uh-huh!

Do I write really awesome games and stuff? I wanna be a programmer when I grow up!

< Hmm... I don't know about that. I am certain you could if you wished to do so, but I suspect you were a bit busy with very important things, like helping to save the world. >

[He pats Mail's tiny hands reassuringly where they clutch around him, and carefully begins to walk. He's not sure where they're heading, but this place is an unknown, and he hopes to find a more familiar place to wait out Matt's return to his proper age.]

Saving the world, for real?

[It's the sort of thing Mail daydreams about, while being aware on some level that it probably won't ever actually happen.]

Did you save it with me? Were there awesome space battles?

[He can't help but laugh, amused at how very astonished he sounds. But his cheer deflates slightly when he continues his questions.]

< We fought against different bad guys, in different worlds before we met. But I'm sure that if you had fought in my world, you would have been excellent in fighter combat. > [Just like a simulation, or video game, only with... much higher stakes. But he truly does think Matt would be fully capable of handling himself in such a situation.]

Ohhh.

[That's still pretty cool, but it would've been way more awesome if they'd been together. Mail wonders if that's why Elfangor seems to get a little bit sad, but decides that idea is silly.]

Is that what you do?

Hey. How come I'm allowed? [He shifts his hands a little, to convey that he means the touching thing without actually saying it's what he means.]

[He very nearly flinches at that last question, and knows quite well what it is Mail's referring to before he moves his hands--but that does not stop the combination of the two from causing his fur to fluff up.]

< It... ah... > [There must be a way to put this that is not utterly embarrassing.]

< Well. I told you that we are close when you are an adult, yes? It is part of that. Some people are just closer with one another, more so than they are with others, and in such situations, casual touch is not only permitted, but welcome. > [Yes. That works - sufficiently generic, and in no way indicative of anything that children ought not hear.

As for that other question...] < Yes, I was a fighter pilot. Even though I made my way up through the ranks to what I believe is the Earth equivalent of a General, that was always my favorite part. >

You mean like boyfriends, don't you?

[Mail's eight, not a baby!

It makes perfect sense to him, and it isn't a big deal. He has very little idea what boyfriends and girlfriends do anyway, and the other stuff they're talking about is way more interesting.]

A General? Wow! D'you get tell lots of people what to do, and they hafta do it? How about me? What do I do?

[If he thought his fur was fluffing before, that nothing compared to how puffed up it get at Mail's accurate assessment.]

< Ah... Well. Um. Yes, exactly. >

[CHANGE OF TOPIC, yes, that is a wonderful idea. He latches onto it and runs with it.]

< There are many people under my command, yes--but being a War-Prince is more about inspiring your fellow warriors to do what is right and necessary, especially in times of war. >

[And frankly, he suspected that the Electorate did not particularly want him in direct command of anyone. He was more useful to them as a weapon they could count on to hurl himself into dangerous situations, moreso than effectively lead others. At least, this is the conclusion to which he had come for explaining his rapid rise through the ranks.]

< You were not in the military. > [He considers, thinking of the comics that his friends introduced him to during his time on Earth.] < I believe you were part of a, hmm, vigilante effort. ... Like Batman. >

[He idly hopes that Matt will just find that comparison amusing ( ... )
