[Ben has recovered physically from his ordeals. Mentally and emotionally is quite something else. But he can function, as long as strangers don't touch him, and he finally declares himself fit for duty.
Mainly because rattling around with nothing to do is driving him crazy.]
Ach, yes, the scenic route, naturally. What other explanation could there be?
[Kati turns off at the usual place, a narrow little dirt road that leads to a less-trafficked picnic area. The sedan follows, no longer trying to be subtle. ]
Good thing there's two picnic tables here. Wouldn't want to have to share. [Ben's voice is heavy with cynicism as they park, and he grabs the cooler out of the back and lays claim to one of the tables, setting it down with no small authority and then ranging himself beside Kati in a not-quite defensive posture as the brown sedan purrs to a stop and two men in expensive suits get out.]
[Kati surveys the two of them, relaxing slightly as she recognizes the shorter one -- not that she knows him well, but she does know him as a fellow member of the Organization.]
[The shorter one is the one in charge, and he inclines his head to her after giving Ben a thinly-disguised look of contempt. "Kati. We understand your holiday is over with." His voice grows cold. "We also understand that much of your holiday has been spent pampering... this." The contempt is open now.
Ben's jaw tightens, and he lifts his chin just a fraction.]
[Kati tips her head slowly to one side. Her voice is infuriatingly mild.]
I would consider "pampering" to be a poor description. And I was not aware in any case that the Organization had any rule against my spending my holidays as I see fit, so long as I do not cause the Organization any trouble by doing so.
["Of course not." His lip curls, just slightly. "But there have been... concerns raised. About the care you take for it. About your... attachment to it."
Ben stays silent. It's not his place to defend himself or the regard that Kati shows for him. But he's keeping tight hold of his temper.]
[So is Kati; she's been afraid of this all along, and they both have to tread very carefully right now. Which isn't to say she isn't going to push back, but she is for damned sure keeping her tone mild while she does it.]
Some people become greatly attached to their guns, but they are not usually brought to task for it.
["Guns are tools. Not pets. No one shows affection for a gun."
This gets an eyeroll from Ben. Clearly these clowns have never had a favorite weapon. He still misses his Micro Desert Eagle. But the man notices the eyeroll, and his lips tighten. "That. That is exactly what I am speaking of, Kati. You do not discipline this creature properly. It is disrespectful to its betters.
If you are giving orders, be good enough to phrase them that way, please, and stop beating about the bush. If instead you are here to offer your opinion only, I would ask you to let my work speak for itself regarding whether or not my treatment of him has any bearing on my duties. I assure you, it will not.
[The man's eyes narrow. "I had not thought you'd be recalcitrant about the matter. But, since you will not take a hint..." He smiles. It's not a nice expression. "Discipline your wolf. I wish to see it writhing on the ground for its insolence."
Ben freezes. She's never shocked him. Not even once. He's not even sure where the damn collar controller is.]
[Well, it's in her pocket, but like hell is she going to shock Ben with it on this asshole's say-so.
But he doesn't know that. Her hand goes into her pocket and comes out with the ugly little thing clasped in it, and she regards the object coolly before giving Ben a look that is sharp and rebuking and not at all affectionate.]
Well? You know better than that. We've discussed how you must act, have we not?
[And her thumb digs into a button on the remote's surface.
Not the functional one, of course. But again, Asshole doesn't need to know that. She just has to trust Ben to be clever enough to take the hint.]
[Ben has a bare second to realize what she's getting at before the current doesn't hit his body. He knows what it's supposed to look like when he's being shocked, however, because Dad knows he's been shocked and seen it done to other wolves often enough.
He hits the ground, clenching his teeth and making strangled animal noises, convulsing. He hopes it's convincing.]
[Kati makes a good show of it, putting a shade of reluctance into her expression, a touch of resignation. I don't enjoy this but I do it when I have to.
She keeps her thumb on the button while she glances at the Organization man. Let him be the one who cues the end of this little drama, it will be more convincing.]

Ben relaxes, but stays on the ground, panting hoarsely and shivering.] I'm sorry, Mistress. I won't embarrass you again.

I do not consider it best practice to discipline my wolf in public. That does not mean I do not do so.
