Because we don't have enough threads together ;) I.15 - End of Time references? captoftardis November 19 2011, 22:32:25 UTC
[He told himself he wouldn't seek her out. He made every effort to see Donna, Sarah Jane, and Martha... but there were two women he told himself he wouldn't see, couldn't see, because it'd probably make him hurt even more than he already was.

And yet there he was standing there with hands in his pockets of his jacket, watching River at some excavation site with students. He didn't mean for her to see him, but she was readjusting a light at the site and her gaze happened upon his. Frowning, he took two steps back and walked away.]

[River had never been able to shake herfascination with Egypt from her early days, so when one of her interning students earned a traveling grant to a similar pyramid-filled planet, she jumped at the chance to supervise.

The day had been long and excruciatingily warm, just like the last few. A few fossils and broken clay pots were all that had turned up so far, but the work felt fulfilling nonetheless. Still, River was looking forward to a good meal and a shower. Adjusting one of the lamps to help a student, her eyes glanced over and settled on a solitary man just a short distance away. Watching her. Not the students or the site, but specifically her. She was sure of it.

It seemed that it wasn't his intention to catch her gaze; he soon began to walk away, as if any attention to his presence was unwanted. There was only one man River knew who could behave like that, and once the thought struck her she bounded after him, kicking up sand and coughing after him.]

[He didn't wait. Instead, he kept walking. The TARDIS was just in his line of view.]

Go back to your team, River. [He spun halfway to convey the message, and again cursed his pitiful luck of her following him. He knew he shouldn't have shown up.]

[Well that just made her more determined to follow him, catching the TARDIS just a bit up ahead. Though she was a bit hurt that he apparently didn't want to speak to her] My team's fine. They know what they're doing.

...What are you doing, Doctor?

I'm asking myself the same thing right now. [He noticed she now blocked the way between him and the TARDIS. So much for his great escape, but he was too weak to run anymore at this point. Digging his hands further in his jacket pocket, he looked at the stars and sighed.] Let me go River. Pretend you didn't see me and go back.

Sorry sweetie, I've done quite enough pretending and lying in my life; I'm trying to kick the habit. [River replied firmly, her arms across her chest as she blocked his way. She wasn't entirely sure where in their timelines they were, but obviously something was going on with him] Now talk to me before I toss you in with the mummies.

Ohhh, I suppose a trip down memory lane is the best way to summarize what I'm doing. Nice work with the students, by the way. [He tugged at his earlobe, as he thought about the best way to explain why he was there without flat out saying "I'm dying". Somehow being so abrupt with his answer would be too melodramatic. Besides, he hadn't intended on speaking with her in the first place and there was no cause for concern.]

Oh, well...thank you. [She wasn't quite used to direct compliments like that - not when they weren't facing imminent danger, at least] So there's no big bad lurking around here that you've come to stop? You're... taking a vacation - a day off, rather?

[A devious smile spread across her face and she quickly moved to link her arm with his] That means you've got time for a dinner date, then!

Well, [He frowned briefly as pain flashed through him; he played it off as just being startled.] I actually can't stay very long. Am on a bit of a schedule... Besides, my appetite is a bit lacking these last few days.

[Even with his gentle protesting, River's already started leading him away from the TARDIS, towards her tent] Alright, you don't have to eat, but at least stay for a few minutes and chat. I've got a question or two before you go.

After you, sir. [She unzipped the flap and guided him in towards her tent]

[He felt a pang of guilt at her eagerness to talk to him and spend time with him. Of course she wanted to, given their strange history and supposed future, and then for him to randomly show up? It was probably a dream come true or at least quite the pleasant surprise for her, and he had no intention for any of this to happen.

Gingerly, he took a seat in the corner, and quietly watched her zip up the entrance way.] I'm serious when I said I can't stay long, River.

[That probably came off a little more snippy than he intended, but then again he always thought this version of himself was a bit rude... And then he had to mentally slap himself for the mixed feelings bubbling up inside.]

I know, sweetie, I know. [River replied, moving from the entrance to the small trunk at the opposite end of the tent. She knelt, rummaging through it wordlessly as if his snippy tone had hurt her.] But there's time and a place for everything, and right now yours is here.

[Getting to her feet, River pulled out her journal from the trunk, along with something else, a bundled mystery.] Now....question time. On your trip down memory lane - am I a good memory or a bad one?

A... erm... What?

[He leaned forward with his brows furrowed. Was this a trick question? And wasn't that her journal that she refused to tell him any details at all?] Well, good, I suppose. Well, I don't suppose, I know, but... What's that?

It's a gift. Now be patient.

[River put the bundled mystery down beside her, flipping through her diary] I just need to find the instructions you gave me....ah! Here we are!

[She gave a small smile, reviewing the instructions before closing her diary again] Now about that good memory... would you prefer to make a better one before you have to leave?

Your tags aren't weak at all! And I totally didn't know where were minisodes! What kind of fan am I? captoftardis November 22 2011, 00:51:24 UTC
I... don't know. Yes? Wait, what are you wanting me to do?

[He didn't want to volunteer himself to anything mischievous and actually, anything that didn't involve a whole lot on his part would be preferable. But then again, if he did get just a scratch, it'd heal almost instantly and it wouldn't matter.] River...
