Melon Field 4 [Foxfire]

South of town is a thick forest. If Memento Eden were bound by logic -- which it isn't -- then the tall trees with their ring count would dictate that this is an ancient forest. The trees are so large and prosperous that they block out the sun, giving a haunted air to an already unusually silent wood. There is nothing growing on the forest ground, ( Read more... )

Wandering into the forest, Eve had been attracted by the idea of the melons. Melons were a summer tradition, so maybe she could get a nice taste. This patch in particular, it seemed out of place to be growing in the middle of a dark forest. She observed the melons of various colors before randomly deciding to pick up the first blue melon.

Using her powers, she transformed part of her hair into a blade and struck hard at the melon, trying to split it. It couldn't be that hard... could it?

Why yes. Yes it could.

Blinking, Eve tried to stab it again, this time turning several strands of her hair into blades, stabbing simultaneously in 12 places on the melon.

In 12 places, the melon simultaneously failed to be punctured.

Eve was beginning to grow frustrated. Perhaps a scattered attack was an incorrect method. She put down the melon and formed her hair into a large steel mallet. Getting another idea, she jumped into the air, sprouting a pair of angel wings from her back, and flew up high into the sky, about 50 feet. In an instant, she retracted her wings and formed her body into stone, falling rapidly, then slamming the hammer down on the melon with an enormous force behind it.

Elaborate. But no cigar. Or tasty melon inside. Much healthier than a cigar, melons.

Eve huffed, giving a frustrated whine. Nothing was working. Stupid melon... Picking it up, she gave it a shake and held it up to her ear, seeing if she could hear anything.

That she cannot. Except, perhaps, the nearby screams and thuds and gunshots of other people failing to open melons.

Sighing, Eve paused for a moment, thinking back to all of the stories that she'd read. People had opened things in many different ways... perhaps one of them would work?

((In this order:
-Pushing down on any sort of weaker spot on the melon
-Saying "Open Sesame"
-Saying "Abracadabra"
-Trying to squeeze it with her hair
-Trying to slice it with vibrating-molecule blade
-Punting it into the air
-Trying to use her thoughts to will it open
-Dropping it from the sky
-Throwing it into the sky
-Hitting it with a bat created from her hair
-Stepping on the melon
-Trying to burn a hole in it with a magnifying glass made from her hand
-Rolling it down a hill (she went away for this one)
-Attempting most of the above methods outside the field
-Bringing it back to the field and attempting to break it with Red #5
-Yelling at it for being a stupid melon))

Yelling at it? How cruel.

The melon impassively takes her abuse.

Eve let out a frustrated yell before stomping back to the apartments in a huff, carrying both melons with her.
