Reading Question

I have a neighbor whose 8 year old daughter is incredibly smart & soaking up every book she can get her hands on. So far the mother has only allowed 5th grade or lower level reading to avoid accidentally exposing the girl to content that's inappropriate for an 8 year old. She asked my mom if we knew of any books that the girl could read, and if ( Read more... )

How about The Giver? As far as I remember, it's intense, but not sexual. I think there might be brief mention of puberty, though. Maybe that's off limits?

The Little Prince is one of my favorites. Again, perhaps a bit more intense, but no more than Harry Potter or anything like that.

If she's into history at all, I still think The Witch of Blackbird Pond is a good read for that age group. There's romance, but nothing sexual. I'm not sure there's even a kiss. :)

I LOVED the Witch of Blackbird Pond when I was little.

Hmmm...good question, let's see what else I can think of. I don't know about the reading level difficulty of anything I'm about to list, but I'll name anything I knew I liked when I was a kid...

Where the Red Fern Grows, All of the Shiloh series, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, all of the Little Houses on the Prairie, anything by Judy Blume, Little Women, The Secret of NIMH.

I don't remember it too well, but I wouldn't think that the Neverending Story would have sex in it? Like I said...I don't remember it!

AH! The book is called "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh."

All I could remember was "Nimh" so I googled it, and the movie's name popped up first.

Thank you to both of you! I forgot about some of these! I remember liking Witch of Blackbird Pond too. This makes me want to reread some of them.

Mary (the girl) was very excited about some new titles. I had hard copies of books to lend her too, so it's a good starting point.

What about the Boxcar Children series. I don't know about the reading level but they were my favorite when I was younger. The Cay and Timothy of the Cay were my favorites in middle school also. I forget who the author was but his book The Hatchet was really good, I know I read a couple of his books.
