So it was announced that a $1200 energy relief check will be added to this years PFD. I am so relieved about this! I was seriously worried how we were going to afford to heat our cabin this year. But thankfully now that won't be a problem. Plus with the large PFD, I'll be able to pay off a large chunck of my unsubsidized student loans. Whoot!

Holy crap! That's awesome! I think we might take one of them to pay off Jedi's toolbox and stuff everything else into savings this year. That'd go a long way towards putting us in our own place.

Edit: Do we know how big the PFDs themselves are gonna be this year?

Not yet, but it is estimated it will be about $2000 or so. But there is talk that the PFD with the energy check will come out early, sometime in september.

Holy crap... that's enormous! It'd definitely be sweet if they came out early this year.

We are happy about the energy money too. It will get us our first fill-up this winter.

On another note... your photos are in, but they couldn't be picked up at the PO until yesterday - the day we got on the road. I'll be picking them up on Thursday after we get home, and get them to you ASAP.

Thanks Susan!!! Friday is my last day at work and then I have until the 19th off, so I can pick them any time around then. ^_^ I hope your trip continues to be beautiful!

I won't get a PFD this year either, alas. Mostly my own dumb fault. :( So I'm seriously wondering if I can still get the energy assistance. They mentioned early on that people who'd been there since the start of the year would get it, but I hadn't heard anything since. I hope I can get that.

What is PFD?

And I'm glad you'll be able to heat the cabin this winter and pay on those wonderful loans! haha.

The PFD (or permanent fund dividend) is a pool of money that the state of Alaska has that is derived from oil profits. This money is invested in a variety of things. Since the resources of the state are owned by the people who live in the state, that money is divided among its residents every year. The amount of the PFD varies from year to year, depending on a five year average of oil prices and what is earned from the investments. You have to have lived in Alaska for two years before you become eligible to receive the PFD.
