Maybe a proper bed then? :)

Are the two really mutually exclusive? :(

I have friends who have futons and bad lower backs, and they say theirs work fine. Too bad they bought it so long ago they don't know where it's from.

I haven't tried more than maybe half a dozen futons ever in my life, but none of them agreed with me. And I like a *very* firm mattress, too. That doesn't mean there aren't ones, but I think your search gets a lot more difficult if you're limited to futons only.

Osteos might have opinions about which ones are better.

From what I understand, a medium-firm is best for someone with probs like mine. I can't sleep on the super firm ones!

I go to Vic Uni Osteo, where I get treated with 4th year students. Mine doesn't know what's best. :(

My brother (who has a spinal alignment problem) bought a futon from Futon Plus a few years ago and it was good for him.

I got my futon about ten years ago from a place on Smith St, Collingwood/Fitzroy (I'm never quite sure which is correct...). A bit of a quick Google shows a place called "Real Futons" at 301 Smith St, which looks about right location-wise but obviously I can't be certain it's the same mob.

In any case they custom-built to my needs and I've been very happy with it.

Ah yes, I talked to the guy that runs that place yesterday...they're SO expensive. But thanks for the heads up all the same. :)

Having slept on a futon with a bad back, I'd recommend looking into one with a double thick mattress if you can - i find otherwise that I wake up stiff and aching from a lack of sufficient padding.

If you're getting a base as well, try getting a slightly higher one to minimise the bending for getting in and out.

As for the bread, try the baker at Vic Market? Most of the chain bakeries don't make traditional sourdough it's true, not sure if Flinders Breads do, but I think you're best bet is either the Vic Market or a Farmers market.

I'll see what I can find, does it matter what it's made out of...wool, cotton, foam?

I already have a futon base. :)

Yeah, it's actually the baker at Vic Market that's kind of inspired this post. I was disappointed at how bleh their sourdough is. Their pastries are incredible...I'm just so underwhelmed with everyone's sourdough in this country!

I know you can get double layer ones which tend to have foam over a wool layer, and I've heard good things.

I'd go for either a double layer or wool with a reasonable thickness myself.

Have you got a local farmers market? To be honest I haven't gone looking for authentic sourdough but can only imagine it's more likely to be found in smaller, less commercial outlets. Some good delis might have it?

Will look into that with Futon Plus.

I'm in Carlton so my local is QV, unfortunately. I think the only time I had it here was at Superfino before they got new management. Their sandwiches had GREAT sourdough!

I can't remember the specs on the futon I got from Futons Plus, but I do remember them being prompt about delivery, and the bed - which is now a spare because Ze Boy doesn't like them - has held up well for the three odd years I've had it. The bedhead has always been a little wobbly; not sure I'd get one in hindsight.

The people from Futons Plus didn't put the futon together on arrival, but it's not that hard to do yourself. Which is good - they're easily dismantled for storage or moving.
