...Am I going nuts here?

I'm having fun with knitting. Lots of fun. Possibly too much fun. This includes fun thinking about patterns, plotting future projects, and looking at stuff online that I can't afford. (Don't worry, I'm not desperately trying to work out how to afford it; I'm enjoying drooling at things without feeling the need to fling money at 'em. Phew ( Read more... )

I will tells you one thing as a knitter.... yarn bells in the traditional style do not allow you to take the work that is under the bell easily out of the house. I go to a lot of knitting groups. this means I need my yarn mobil and lugging the bell and project to where ever I'm going is a hassle, that and it doesn't stop the amazing moving string thing that cats love. It just means that the cats can't run off with your ball.

With Holly, it's the running-off-with-the-ball that's the problem. She can be convinced (with a little effort) to leave the stringy bit alone, but show her a ball of yarn and she MUST HAZ TOY. I was knitting in my bunk bed the other night, and she got one of the balls - through a hole in the bag I didn't know was there - and dragged it down to the floor and into the hall before I could stop her.

Twice. :P

So I really only need the bell(s) in the house, and so long as I make one(s) that have the curled slit to put the wool in and out, the project will still be transportable. :D

Hee! On the plus side, the Canberra Potters' Society does 'try it out' sessions that cost a LOT less than a whole multi-lesson course, so I can at least find out if this idea will be fun to pursue before spending tons of moolah. On the minus side, their next session isn't until March... but if I'm still interested then, that will prove whether this idea has legs. :3

those are awesome and i want them! i don't have too much of a problem with my cat running with the ball though, she's more into playing with the string. Have you discovered the joys of Ravelry and its immense pattern library yet?

Aren't they so cool?! Of course anything I make won't look nearly that pretty, but still. Cool!

Holly can be convinced to leave one strand of wool alone, even if it's moving, but she wants to own All The Balls. [insert juvenile snicker here] She'll bite through heavy-duty plastic bag to get to 'em, and she has highly-advanced skills at cat macrame that can tie together furniture in three different rooms if she has a little time alone to really work at it.

Oh lord yes. XD

knitting is good for the soul [/rabid addict].
two things:
1) Join ravelry.com you will love it (free patterns out to wazoo!)
2) a terra cotta pot, turned upside down, and shellacked inside makes a great yarn bell, and you can paint the outside

Yus. Yus it is. :3 It's very satisfying to watch it grow, isn't it? :D

1) I'm already there. AUGH SO MANY PRETTY THINGS!

2) Ooh, that's a lovely idea for me to try while I'm waiting for the next 'try it out' session at the potters' society. Thanks! :D

I could prolly throw some, I know enough to make something workable.... and there is a pottery within a fairly reasonable distance, roughly $20 for like a pound of clay, including the kilns and glaze, I think. No lessons required... but even if I did make some for you, I'm still on the really wrong continent for shipping. UPS will pack and ship and guarantee it'll get there unbroken... but I don't have the slightest idea how much it will cost.
