Just wanted to tell you how quietly and beautifully haunting I find this story. It's written with such an emotional reserve that shows such respect for the life and fate of the characters. I find myself reading it slowly and carefully, following, as it were, from a respectful distance. Your characterizations of Jack and Ennis have them both emotionally fragile and yet enviably strong and resilient which is quite an accomplishment of precision and balance in your writing.

It's really interesting to hear that you read the story with a certain distance - because that's just the way I wrote it.
I myself felt like an observer - I was just the storyteller - and it was helpful for me - otherwise I would have suffer too much, I guess...

That is such a perfect exit line, it really is. This is a great fic. Ennis seems even more closed off from life than OS Ennis, which is saying a lot. I can't wait to find out more about his past and how he ended up here. I am looking forward to the next chapters. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Yes, you might be right that this Ennis is more closed up than the original one - but he's older. He's about 30 years old and the OC-Ennis was 19 when he met Jack - so maybe that's the reason that he seems more careful and withdrawn.
I don't know - I never thought about it before but it's a really interesting aspect !
