he is, she imagines, off saving the world or at the very least an extraordinarily recalcitrant kitten hiding in a tree

That is a hilarious and strangely adorable mental image.

And I love the way you weave the comic universe in with the movieverse. Pepper calmly scheduling an appointment for Dr. Doom just makes me grin, and I don't even read the comics.

Very nice, I love how her day seems so hectic yet Pepper always remain calm and composed, she is like a force of quiet while the world zooms by, and I love the imagery of her lingering over her food. A proper meal outside must mean a lot to such a busy woman. In addition, I love how it ends so simply and domestically for her. The ending is beautiful.

First off: DOOOM. Dr. Doom being grumpy and superior! Pepper handling it with impeccable flair and little patience! I love that she probably uses the same calming techniques in handling a Dr. Doom call as she does handling Tony when he's being grumpy - she's had practice, poor girl.

There are so many little bits and turns of phrase I like in this, like:

...she does so that her efforts will be in vain, that her life is now too ridiculous to be saved.

or:

Just beyond the thick veneer of light pollution and exhaust, the stars begin to glimmer.

...which describes LA so perfectly, I can't even.

Anyway, loved this, love that weird sort of pattern her life has fallen in to, how its in part Tony's fault, and a little of her own for not leaving, and how she's at once frustrated and frustratingly satisfied at the same time. *fangirls along with shaney*

You write a wonderful Doom. (Which is not to say the whole thing is not wonderful, but the Doom bits make me gleeful.)
