You're a fast reader. I picked up the first book this week and already the absence of rapey marriage has been a pleasant surprise! Wonder why they felt the need to change that.
I confess by the half of the third book I started skimming less interesting chapters so that's cheating. I can't decide whether I like that format or not. On a structural level it's brilliant, but it frustrates me to no end when I get into a storyline only to get pushed out of it. I'll blame it on my internet-addled gratification button-pushing brain.
Yeah, I recently watched that episode with a friend and it struck me again just how gross they rendered it with the "No"s and the shot of her face as he turns her over and her crying. WTF? In the book the last no is clearly indicated as a question (the narrative voice actually intervenes to point that out instead of only marking it) and she ends up saying yes! It's not like a stupid detail -- it's a totally different thing! Idk the more I think about it the more it irritates me.
I quite liked how the scene was portrayed in the book! Dany was scared, evidently, but Drogo was gentle to her. He didn't try to make the future mother of his children into an enemy, he didn't brutalize her. When she said no to something, he usually moved to soothing her fears. Yes, she was still sold in marriage, but it wasn't half as bad as the show made it appear. And I don't get a sense that she was afraid of him beyond that first night.
I've argued with fans of the books who like Dany (and Drogo) and it's only now that I understand why.
the later books need editing, though I don't mind some of the other POVs because even when I'm not too interested in the characters, they tell me more about the world and scope and everything
but yesssss someone else is bored by Jon! I think it's only other people that make his chapters interesting - Ygritte, etc. I prefer Samwell to him.
I think that when the subplots get to a fevered pitch (like Tyrion's and Sansa's in book 3) I totally lost patience with the other characters not near/in King's Landing.
I totally agree that other people make Jon more interesting--particularly Ygritte. I also agree Samwell is more interesting--like when he killed an Other and met up with Bran.
