Well, he actually used to have about those size gauges in his ears at that age. I was trying to be as canon as possible, while still maintaining the theme of the story. (They do look pretty good on him, I must say.)

He actually used to back when he was my age, there's pictures floating around the web. If you look closely at pretty much any picture of him now where you can see his ears, they never closed back up, so you can see the little holes where they used to be.
