Chapter 1

The dinner party at the Lees turned out bigger and harder than any of them had thought. Luckily the party was the Lees’, which they had made obvious, and the engagement and future wedding didn’t get the attention Jaejoong’s mother had hoped for. Jaejoong and Yunho however were relived, but taking a look at Joo-Eun she obviously was in the same state as her mother. Jaejoong could relate-she was about to get married to the kindest and most handsome man in town and no one really paid attention to it. About what Jaejoong had to go through every single second of his life. He couldn’t tell anyone about his happiness and he couldn’t brag about the fact that the one he had adored for so long had chosen him to love.

Jaejoong was mostly alone during the party, without his mother’s knowing, of course. She’d send girl after girl his way, obviously spying from some chair to see if he had fallen head over heels, dropped down on his knee and proposed yet. Unless one of those girls had fake boobs and a taped-back cock he wasn’t interested. In fact, he still wouldn’t be interested. Because even though Yunho wasn’t his, he was still in love.

He sipped his champagne. The tall glass was decorated with frosty crystals in perfect patterns and he felt like dropping it to the ground just to see it break. Everything just had to be perfect in their world, in his world. And perfect was Yunho and Joo-Eun together. It killed him more than anything. But he kept quiet and focused on the sparkling drink in his hand instead, wishing that for once he could just drink to get drunk and forget. Get drunk and pretend to come home to a husband and kids with coffee brown hair and large eyes.

It had been his birthday wish for two years now.

It was getting late, and Eun-Hee was starting to panic, not listening to her husband telling her to leave their son alone.

“He’s been alone for 18 years; does he have to be anymore?” was the only thing she’d say before grabbing yet another girl and shooing her to the obviously tired and sad male drinking by himself. He didn’t want to disappoint his mother, but she was really making it too easy for him to do so tonight.

This time he hadn’t bothered telling her off and instead he watched her ramble, trying to pretend as if he was listening. He could spot his mother’s hopeful gaze over the pretty and silky knot at the top of her head and he sighed. She was starting to get bored being the only one talking, and he couldn’t have that, now could he? His mother would send another girl over anyway, so what was the point in keep trying to get rid of them?

“Listen, I’m not interested in you, and nothing will come out of this. But if you just stay here and pretend to enjoy it I’d be grateful.” It wasn’t like him to ask kindly, especially not to a girl like her, but to get her to follow through he felt that it was necessary.

“Grateful you say?” She raised a slim brow. “I don’t want your gratefulness, mister.”

“What would you like then?”

“You’re young, you’re handsome. Shouldn’t you be able to figure something out? I’d say we want the same things.”

He took a sip of his drink. “Sorry, he’s busy.”

“What?”

He resisted the urge to laugh to himself, instead choosing to look down on his shoes. “Nothing, just saying that we don’t want the same thing. Not at all.”

She gave out a fake sigh, fixing the knot on her head. “I guess I have to leave you then.”

“I guess you do.” He bowed deeply, barely even standing straight in time to see her angry face scoffing and walking off. Her dress dragged on the floor and if he was like her he might have wished for her to trip and make a fool out of herself. The ones with a beautiful outside never had an inside to match it. That was what he loved about Yunho. He had the money, the status, the looks and the power to do anything he wished, and still the things he did choose to do never only benefited him.

He leaned back against the wall, allowing himself to rest for a while before he’d get bothered by another girl his mother liked. He looked around before putting his glass down and quickly sneaked away to hide in the hallway. He stayed there until it was time to move home, not admitting to himself that it hurt to see Joo-Eun kiss Yunho goodbye. It didn’t matter that Yunho didn’t close his eyes, or barely even kissed back. What hurt was that he knew that sooner or later Yunho would have to learn to kiss her back with closed eyes and forget all about Jaejoong. It hurt even more to know that Jaejoong was the one that would have to force the only man he ever loved to forget him and marry his sister with love, not regret.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

“So, did you enjoy yourself tonight?”

“Yes, I did.” The soft clicking of the horse outside their window was mixed with the soft chirping of insects; it made him feel less awkward about everything. It made him feel less alone, less like a failure to his expectant mother.

“If you didn’t find anyone charming, we can always look around at the-” She fell quiet and smiled apologetically to her husband before turning sideways to look out the window. Joo-Eun shared a curious look with her brother and leaned closer to their mother.

“The what?” Eun-Hee faked a small laugh, holding her cheek as she waved her hand around.

“Nothing, dear. Don’t worry about that.”

“But mo-” She was interrupted by the loud and terrified sound from the horse before the cart came into a full-blown run, throwing Jaejoong and his father forward. Jaejoong winced at the pain in his elbow when he knocked it hard on the floor. He lifted his head to look outside, but he saw nothing and he focused on trying his hardest to get himself up before the horse took a sharp turn. The yells from the coachmen made him realise what was going on, and the two females in the cart screamed and ducked when the forest let out a string of men, all screaming to lead the horse into the right direction-the direction that would trap them.

Being quiet was always of importance when travelling through the dark-robbers could be lurking anywhere at anytime, and if they were enough they could easily scare the horse enough to stand still and rob them. The most common thing though was to kill the horse first, making it impossible for anyone to run. He prayed they wouldn’t succeed this time.

“Robbers!” his father let out, hoping to catch the attention of someone close. “Thieves!” He held onto his forehead as he yelled, the thin streaks of red between his fingers telling Jaejoong that he had hit his head in the fall.

Jaejoong was the only one not going crazy. He tried to breathe, tried to calm down, tried to think. He couldn’t come up with a single thing; the horse wouldn’t stop and they’d get trapped and murdered. He didn’t even get to see Yunho tonight, and now he’d die? That was cruel. He had always believed in faith, but this was too cruel to be planned.

Another neigh was heard, and new voices exploded. He strained his ears and decided that nothing could have been better than what he heard. People defending them, helping them. He couldn’t see anyone yet, but he could hear the clear shouts and hooves thundering against the dirt coming closer. A cart similar to theirs appeared at a crossroad, forcing the white and panicking horse to stop sprinting. He was slammed backward into the wall by the sudden stop and barely managed to catch his sister when she was lunged forward.

Only a few of the robbers had a horse, and those five had already caught up with them, drawing the only weapons they had. Only one of them had a gun, the other four having to use knives. Usually it was enough to get their hands on a decent amount of money, but the ones they usually robbed obviously didn’t have guns in their cart. Jaejoong’s parents didn’t, but the other cart was clearly more prepared than anyone-including the robbers. Two pipes stuck out, the persons holding them shielding behind the door. It wouldn’t protect them much, but at least it was a cover.

There wasn’t any use to shout out a warning, simply settling with shooting a warning up in the air. The guns were loaded, and clearly had enough ammunition to waste a shot-that should have been enough of a message to make the robbers retreat. However, these ones must have been either stupid or proud fools, because they only moved forward, choosing to fire straight at the door. Eun-Hee and Joo-Eun screamed and crawled even closer together; Jaejoong was about to do the same until he caught a glimpse of the man fighting. Everything froze, the face and body caught in the crossfire making his whole world cry out in despair and absolute fear. He wanted to throw himself out of the cart and protect the man, his man.

“Yunho?!” he unconsciously yelled out, but he wasn’t heard. Bullets were flying left and right, and when he could hear loud and angry voices coming closer, he knew he had to do something. They were distracting them, giving the other robbers the time to catch up and attack them from ground level. From every single angle there was.

His sister raised her head at her fiancé’s called name and cautiously peered out the window. She gave out a horrified gasp, trying to catch the attention of Yunho.

“Yunho! Yunho, help!” Jaejoong’s eyes widened, instantly jumping up from his position to make Joo-Eun stop her yelling. Yunho couldn’t afford being distracted! Not now! Three of the five men were dead; the fourth had turned his back and hid in the forest, the only man left was the man with the gun. Looking out the window he knew Yunho had heard them, because he was met with the terrified brown eyes of his beloved staring right into his own. Jaejoong swore he could see the colour draining from Yunho’s face in a fraction of a second.

He desperately tried to bring Yunho’s attention back to the fight and after what seemed like minutes Yunho came to his senses, firing one of his probably last shots at the stubborn robber. The man was hit, and he fell off the horse with a deep groan, crimson oozing out to colour the fingers clenching his chest red.

He looked back at Yunho, breathing out when he realised that he was fine.

“Get out of here!” Yunho waved his hands at them, making Jaejoong snap out of his thoughts when he realised what was happening. The cart moved, and his head looked back, trying to keep sight of Yunho. He saw the door close, and their horse moved, probably to follow them like he figured Yunho would have instructed.

They rode fast, and several times he was afraid that Yunho’s cart had been lost behind them and that he wouldn’t be able to know how he was. Did he get home safely? Did any robbers catch up with them?

But seconds later they’d appear, calming him down if only for a second. His heart was still thundering painfully in his chest, the knot in his stomach not yet unclenched. Being attacked was frightening, but not half as scary as seeing the one you love fighting for his life. Finally they stopped, the gate to the Kim family’s mansion opening for both carts to enter. As soon as they stopped he wanted to sprint out and kiss whatever he could on the brave man, but as always it was ladies first and he had to help his trembling mother and sister out of the cart first, who of course immediately ran into her fiancé’s arms.

Jaejoong stepped out of the cart, choosing to make sure his father was alright instead of seeing his sister embracing and praising Yunho. He was quite sure Yunho was looking at him, like always, but he couldn’t bring himself to look back.

“Are you alright, Father?” He patted his father’s shoulder, trying to see how badly his head had been wounded as servants tended to him. It wasn’t very large, but it was a deep enough gash that was by no doubts painful.

“I’m perfectly fine, just a small scratch.” He winced as his wound was cleaned of blood and wrapped. “Go see your mother, she must be frightened.” He nodded, walking over to his mother who was by now close to tears, sitting on the ground with a woollen blanket around her, servants and maids trying to calm her and offering tea.

“Mother,” He squatted down next to her and gently wrapped her into his arms for a hug, trying his best to calm her in the only way he could. “Everything’s alright now.”

“Oh, my Jaejoong-ah…” She returned the embrace, wrapping her thin trembling arms around his skinny waist with a hard grip. “Umma is lucky to have you…” She sighed and let go, wiping a small tear from her cheek. “Now where is Yunho? We have to thank him! Have you thanked him yet, son?” He shook his head, and his mother immediately raised her hand and stood up, waving Yunho in their direction. He walked over, Joo-Eun still clinging to him. Jaejoong knew what she felt. Having those arms around her waist, having the warmth of his firm chest against her cheek. It was a comforting hideaway that she wouldn’t leave for anything in the world right now. “Thank you, Yunho-sshi, for everything. You were so courageous tonight; my daughter is blessed and lucky to have you.” Jaejoong made a face and Yunho smiled, knowing perfectly well that Jaejoong hadn’t appreciated those words coming from his mother’s mouth.

“Umma,” Joo-Eun said softly, drawing the attention to herself and her petite voice. She looked fragile and Jaejoong couldn’t even imagine what he looked like right now. “I wouldn’t feel safe sleeping all alone tonight; maybe Yunho should join us in our mansion? It would feel much safer that way.”

“Joo-Eun!” Eun-Hee hissed, appalled by her blunt daughter. “That was highly inappropriate!”

“I don’t mean that he will sleep in my room! Just… in the house. Umma, please.” Her brown eyes turned to Yunho’s face. They were teary and big, but no matter how hard he tried he just couldn’t see what he saw when he looked into Jaejoong’s-depth, a swirling myriad of emotions. Sometimes he understood them, sometimes he didn’t. But it was beautiful to watch nevertheless… To gaze into his soul. “What do you say, Yunho?” Jaejoong looked up, meeting Yunho’s warm, mischievous eyes. They were still concerned about Jaejoong; there was no doubt in Jaejoong’s mind that Yunho would say yes.

Yunho smiled and turned to look at Joo-Eun. “I’d love to, if it’s not a hassle for you of course, Mrs. Kim.”

She could only nod and smile. “If you really want to. Anything for you, my dear. You saved us tonight; you deserve everything you ask for.” Joo-Eun smiled triumphantly and instantly felt relieved. She was most probably hoping for Yunho to climb into her bed tonight, but Jaejoong couldn’t be sure. Either way it didn’t matter what she was hoping, Yunho had a completely other thought in mind.

“Lovely! I’ll get the maids to show you to your room while I go clean up, okay?” She pecked his cheek and was about to walk away when Jaejoong spoke up.

“I’ll do it.” They all turned toward him, his sister and mother with raised eyebrows. He tried not to get affected by the pleasurable glint in Yunho’s eyes. “I mean, our maids would be busy helping Father and Mother, especially after tonight. I can do it.” Yunho’s mouth turned upwards in an amused smile as Jaejoong tried to explain his outburst.

“Okay then, but you need to sleep too, so just send in a maid when you’ve showed him around and she will set up the room and bed for our guest.”

“Of course. Good night, Mother.” He kissed her cheek and then Joo-Eun’s and gestured for Yunho to follow him inside. He bowed once and then disappeared after Jaejoong, trying his hardest to hide his smile. As soon as the door was closed behind them Jaejoong threw his arms around him, holding him as tight as he could. He pressed his face against his torso. “You silly, stupid, brave, kind-hearted, unselfish man,” he chanted, squeezing his eyes shut. He opened them again when he felt a hand cup his cheek.

“I missed you.” Yunho smoothly changed the subject, nuzzling his own nose with Jaejoong’s before kissing him softly. Jaejoong had since long ago started to engrave his kisses into his mind. This one was the sincere kind, the one that made him weak in the knees if Yunho decided to take it a small step further and lightly and urgently suck his lips. He did, and Yunho knew the quiet moan was coming even before he heard it.

Once they let go Jaejoong was already breathing harder and he tried to fix his composure, all the while trying to push away Yunho’s hungry hands.

“Stop trying to distract me, I’m still not done lecturing you, you know.”

“I’m alive, aren’t I?”

“So?! You didn’t even know it was us in that cart and still you did that… It’s so typical of you.” Yunho raised a brow. Was he being yelled at for saving Jaejoong’s family? It was understandable though, if that was Jaejoong doing what he just did he would probably lecture him for about one hour until he had made it clear that he could never do anything like it again and make Jaejoong promise that he wouldn’t.

“Typical of me to…? Take risks?”

Jaejoong sighed. “It’s typical of you to make me worry. I hate you for it.”

Yunho smiled and leaned down to kiss Jaejoong’s forehead. “I’m not the one making you worry; you do that all on your own because you love me.”

“So stop being so perfect so that I can fall out of love with you.” Even though it was meant more as a joke they both knew he was dead serious. “We both know that I will have to sooner or later anyway…” he mumbled, taking a step back and turned around, trusting Yunho to follow him. There was no need to show him around, Yunho already knew most of the mansion.

He stopped by a thick and dark wooden door and opened it, revealing their guestroom. The bed was large and soft, covered in thick garments that were sure to keep the cold out. “Here it is.”

“And how do I get to your room from here?” he asked in a low voice, smouldering and tender eyes looking down at Jaejoong, smooth hands itching to slide underneath the dark tuxedo Jaejoong was wearing.

He wanted to tell him that it was best not to, that he needed the time away from Yunho… But he just couldn’t.

“Go up one floor and turn right, you’ll find your way from there,” he murmured, feeling sad once again. He knew what would happen tonight, and he didn’t like that all they could do was have sex, it wasn’t fair. His sister got to marry him; he got to sleep with him. For now.

The familiar thought burned him and he winced but turned around before Yunho could embrace him-he knew Yunho could tell something was wrong.

“I’m fine. I’ll see you later.” He walked quickly away, making sure to send a maid to Yunho’s room. Yunho knew his lover wasn’t fine at all, but what could he do? He had asked him to run away with him but he had been rejected so many times before. That hurt too-was he only temporary to Jaejoong? Was the marriage a way out from some sort of sexual relationship he was only enjoying with his body? Was he not important enough to risk wealth and an easy life for?

Yunho shook his head and smiled gratefully at the maid. He knew Jaejoong loved him, just like he loved Jaejoong. He just wished Jaejoong would stop shutting him out. He knew the boy had a reason, but that reason could easily be swept away if he let Yunho take him by the hand and lead him away from this town and his responsibilities.

He flopped down on the bed, staring at the cream white roof with a sparkling chandelier made of gold. Everything was luxurious and pretty, screaming out their wealth with the fact that they could afford to decorate a room they barely even used like this. Not that it was that much grander than his own, but it got him thinking. Was it possible that Jaejoong only refused his offer because he wouldn’t be able to handle it? They could bring money; they would live an average life together. Average but happy and in love, it was all he was asking. But then again, he didn’t have a caring family like Jaejoong did; leaving his parents was much easier than it was for Jaejoong. Joo-Eun wasn’t his only sister; he had four more that regularly visited him with husbands and children. To leave all those behind would be hard.

He also knew how much they meant to Jaejoong; if he ran off with Yunho he would certainly lose all respect from his family, and he probably thought he’d lose their love too. Yunho knew that wasn’t the case, at least not if they loved him even half as much as he loved Jaejoong. He was an impossible man to ignore and dislike, and even more impossible to stop loving. Now that was something he knew all too well.

Yunho looked dully outside, he was on the second floor and no trees were in the way. The moon was full and stars were visible in the sky; no clouds shielded a thing making it a very cold night. The view was nothing like the one he used to enjoy with Jaejoong up in his room, where you couldn’t see anything but the dark night sky. The lack of high buildings made it impossible to see the small town through the window when you were in Jaejoong’s bed, and playing with the black hair and just forgetting that there were people out there that hated them for it was probably the moments he treasured the most with his Jaejoong.

He was looking forward to one of those nights today. That was, if he could sneak his way through the house and past Joo-Eun’s room. He slowly got off the bed and decided to plop down on the windowsill. It was hard marble and not very comfortable, but it did give him a good view over his hometown. It was quiet and immobile out there, not giving him a lot to watch, but the events of the day sure gave him a lot to think about. He didn’t need eyes for that, nor did he need an eventful view. So he closed them, leaned back and allowed himself to dream.

A/N: Here you gooo ^-^ I am not very satisfied with this actually, but I guess it's because I wrote this like a year ago haha XD My style now is a bit different (I'm on chapter 10 right now) so it will get betterrrr (in my opinion).
