As nice as short-term happiness is, having an eye to long-term happiness (not to mention stability) has the best results overall.

Hm. One of the things my mom did that was kind of a big deal was MAN would she be proud when she got a good deal or had some creative way of making $7 look like $70. She gave herself a good hearty pat on the back and got others to reinforce it too. So hey, give yourself a big old gold star and crow a little when you make good decisions. Take pride in living poor. It takes smarts.
