Ambient sounds are better, even for music, can't bare that 'piped direct to the ear' music.
It also feels like a very isolationist thing to do, which is fine if you want to send a 'back off and leave me alone signal' *all* the time. Despite the fact that we all like our space now and again, being that closed off to the outside world, sounds and all, on a regular basis can't be good :)
And when you say 'hippy'... surely you mean 'pixie'...?

It's a compliment... Pixies being all small, cute and ehtereal, all mother earth and stuff, dainty little creatures that flit through our lives on gossamar wings, bringing light and happiness wherever they touch, sprinkling their maigic pixie dust as they go...

We have taught ray to look up at buildings and see all the interesting features and architecture that most others miss.

You miss so much - especially in cities if you walk along, head down, hands in pockets... Glasgow is a prime example of that. The city really is beautiful - from the second storey up!
