On this day, in 2001, I woke up and clicked on the TV, as usual. I had Today on, and when I looked at the screen I saw a huge plume of smoke coming from one of the Trade Center towers. As children, we had no real idea of what Memorial Day was. To us it was a day off from school, basically. It was also a harbinger of summer...as it still is now. I can remember Barb, her sister Nancy and I sticking little flags on our bikes and riding them slowly up and down the sidewalk, being a 'parade'. The day after Thanksgiving is known as the biggest shopping day of the year. There are even some families who subject themselves to the madness because it's a tradition.
