kdrama: Arang and the Magistrate eps 4-6

These episodes are more like what I was expecting when the series started (not that I have any ocmplaints at all about what the first few episodes turned out to be.) A fair dose of action, humor and romance, but mostly spooky creepy gothic mystery, in line with the Liao Zhai series from a few years ago (one of which I actually haven't seen yet), ( Read more... )

I am so glad you are enjoying this - this show it's too much fun.

One thing about Joo Wal's killing rate - actually the lunar month they talk about happens only once every few years (according to soompi/other sites more familiar with Korean culture than I am). It's sort of like a lunar Jewish calender where they had to add an extra month every few years so the calendar wouldn't be out of whack - he only has to bring her a soul on a full moon that happens during that month. Still doesn't excuse him but probably explains why nobody caught on earlier - 12 gals missing a year is a lot more noticeable than one or two every few years.

I kinda love that EH is desperately seeking for his Mom and she is literally a soul-sucking monster! (Thus winning worst possible mother-in-law award?)

The main difference between killing 5-10 women (or people period) to live a life of privilege anstead of a life of squalor and killing 100+ women to live a life of privilege instead of a life of squalor is the number of grieving families you leave behind, but that detail really does make a huge difference in the plausibility of their getting away with it. (And also why Moo Young and whoever else the Jade Emperor and Yama having looking into not catching them. One missing soul a month could create some sort of pattern but one every few years is harder to track.

The actress playing Eun Ho's mother is one of those who seriously lights up when playing an evil character.

And it really is a small pool of girls who can say that their boyfriend's mother tried to eat them twice.

I agree that Moo young's sister is probably demon lady. I hadn't thought about the dynamics of the the hairpin. Arang had to get away before she died but how did the pin stay in her possession. Weird.

Well, when she died she "kept" everything that she had on her at the time, but it wasn't the actual item, but...the memory of it? The spirit world version of it, like she explained when he wanted to know why she didn't have it before. Or whatever. Eun Ho could touch it because of whatever it is that lets him see and touch ghosts, but it wasn't the ACTUAL hairpin, and then when Arang became human again the spiritworld version disappeared. (I'm more concerned with how she managed to change out of the clothes she died in and into the ones the shaman made for her, but I guess they were made into some kind of offering ( ... )
