The werewolf thing is definitely a "magic reaction to the presence of vampires" - though why nobody bothers warning the guys is beyond me. Frankly, it seems to me that if the Cullins knew their presence would do this, they'd do the noble thing and go elsewhere. Also, the timing seems pretty off - how long ago did the Cullins move in? At least 6-months or so ago, right? So the "protectors" of the tribe take at least 6 months to magically evolve - in other words, evil vampires could have wiped out the tribe by now. And then the Cullins leave but oh nos! it's too late to stop the transformations!
