Maximus and his bow and arrow

New trailer for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, which doesn't quite as strongly resemble "Gladiator in Sherwood Forest" but still has a lot of that feeling.

Looks a bit more promising, and I'm glad Marian gets to talk in this one, even if it isn't the most original line ever. (But fabulously delivered.) A couple comments ( Read more... )

I think I will just stick to the film in your icon :)

No I don't know I like Robin Hood so I might see it but most likely it will be a rental.

Isn't the Sheriff the shaved head guy? IMDB lists him as being played by Matthew McFaden.

Mark Strong is the shaved head guy (credited as "Sir Godfrey"). Matthew McFaden is the guy nailing the list to the tree who gets an arrow between his fingers.

I'm such a sucker for previews. I was definitely feeling "meh" about this whole thing when I first heard about it... because do we really need to do Robin Hood... again? I still kind of feel that way but I do love Blanchett. :)

And yes... who is the sheriff/where is he?

Having watched this without the sound, I get the impression they were trying to do Robin Hood does the Battle of Hastings and defeats the Normans.

I like that Robin is a bit older and paunchy, but for older Robin Hood and Marian there shall be only Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. Robin and Marian (1976)

Second thought - is it my imagination or are most of the bow and arrow fighting scenes set in a coniferous forest, because the trunks are incredibly lacking in branches at the lower levels, if we're talking of the real Sherwood Forest (which I have visited), which is the sort of forest most of medieval England had, as far as I remember.

I also don't like the font they used on that inscription of ultimate significance.

Hmmmm I don't know how I feel about all this anti-monarchy talk in a Robin Hood film. I mean Robin Hood has always had the theme of King Richard returning and Robin Hood fighting against the injustice of a King ruling without the right to rule. This trailer kind of feels as though he's fighting for democracy which just jars me

Yes. It's possible that this is one of those things where the entirety of a theme is in the trailer and the actual product has much less, but I suspect it's significant that the movie is set after Richard's death.

One can only hope that if they're going down this route that it'll end with Magna Carter and then I can justify it to myself!
