The Highwaywoman's Virtuous Stableboy

A few weeks back, I picked up this book on a whim, based largely on the pretty cover (which does not have the odd distortion issues Amazon's picture has) and am currently reading it.  While it's certainly better than the historical fiction I almost literally threw in the UBS box in self defense (not that that would be hard, from what I read of that ( Read more... )

I seem to recall a coworker talking about it. It involved bigamy and when the heroine learns her dead husband had kids in Ireland with the other wife, she was worried about them and then was all "oh, as long as they're happy" when she hears they've been adopted. I remember because we were both "uhm...how do you know they aren't miserable and/or abused?" (Mind you, I have the highest respect possible for adoptive parents, but adopted =/=auto-paradise.)

Maybe that was "The Pilot's Wife," though.

I'm sorry!

But! The adventurous historical heroine's love interest is unannoying, and very background, and she gets a super-cool super-competent Beautiful Court Lady BFF, AND a clever super-competent Gypsy Girl BFF and between the three, there's almost no "this type of heroine is better than this type!" (I think there is something of a preference for Alida, the court lady, but it seems to be more because her plotline has her in a better position for clever schemes and quick thinking and maneuvering than the others).

So I'm rather glad i saw the title AFTER the cover and reading the description.

"You don’t get “The First Lady’s Gigolo,” “The Queen’s Footman,” “The Empress’s Stableboy,” “The Nurse’s Son,” The Midwife’s Boyfriend, ” etc."

"Lady Chatterley's Lover"?

(not that I think you'd enjoy it or anything like that - I can't be bothered with it either - but it's the closest to that title concept I can think of).

Of course now you know that you absolutely MUST write something titled The Highwaywoman's Virtuous Stableboy. Or else I will.
