****************************************************************
Megamind was pouring himself into completing Doctor Dilamond’s research; it was the only thing that seemed to mean anything to him. He was grateful that Bernadette still continued on their agreement, even though the meetings with Galimer seemed more impromptu these days, almost like he didn’t mind being seen with them anymore. Of course it was Glimmer now; he had changed his name from Galimer, in honor of the way Doctor Dilamond had pronounced it.
Glimmer was still pursuing Roxanne; he was constantly trying to meet with her. Bernadette had given up trying to make him jealous after the dance, something about it being awkward with Norman. Instead Bernadette spent most of her off time with Megamind, helping him with his research, or talking to him while he was trying to concentrate on it.
“You know, half the school doesn’t even know why he did it” Bernadette said calmly, one leg crossed over the other. They were outside, sitting under a large tree.
“What’s that?” Megamind looked up at her; he of course, was going over papers of Doctor Dilamond’s research
“Changed his name”
“Oh” he looked back down at his notes, “Glimmer, right”
“He really doesn’t think his whole plan through, though. I mean, what good does it do to change your name … especially to something like that? I mean, he had always hated it when Doctor Dilamond called him that, now suddenly he wants everyone to call him that?”
“Well, sometimes you realize that the things that bother us the most are the things we miss the most when they’re gone” he turned the paper over to read the other side
Bernadette shrugged, “Yeah, I guess you’re right about that. He’s been drinking a lot more than he used to, as well”
“M-hm”
“I don’t think he’s happy”
“How happy are you, Bernadette?”
Bernadette raised an eyebrow, “We’re not talking about me, we’re talking about Glimmer”
“We’re always talking about Glimmer” he muttered
“What was that?”
“Nothing” he did enjoy talking to Bernadette, even though she went on about Glimmer constantly.
“As I was saying, do you really think he’s happy chasing after the appearance of perfection? I mean, he’s far from perfect … I used to think he was perfect, but he is really not. How pleasing can it be to have to be something you’re not because it’s what everyone else expects of you?”
Megamind sighed, “I don’t know” what he would give for people to expect something other than mischief from him, but he supposed it was similar in a sense … to be expected to be something you’re not.

Megamind was in his room, on his bed, looking over Doctor Dilamond’s research. Then he saw Glimmer enter the room, he had gone out to some kind of party that night; he looked up at him, “How was your time?” He asked him, though he wasn’t sure why since Glimmer had a huge smile on his face
“I had a wonderful time, Megs!” he stumbled slightly as he closed the door behind him
“Megs?” Megamind’s eyes widened
“Yeah, is it okay if I call you Megs?” His smile doubled as he asked
“Well … it’s a little … uh…” Megamind scratched the back of his neck nervously
“Glad you’re okay with it; do you want to know a secret?”
“Oh, what fun” Megamind replied unenthusiastically, not only was he ignoring his reaction to the new nickname but sharing secrets wasn’t exactly something he imagined doing with Glimmer.
“Roxanne, princess of the Vinkus, and me … are going to be married … of course she doesn’t know it yet, but she’ll come around” Glimmer leaned on the wall across from Megamind’s bed
Megamind sighed, of course she was probably already thinking about marrying Glimmer. That was disappointing, but completely expected, someone like her deserved someone better … someone more like Glimmer “Well … congratulations”
“What about you? Have you any secrets?” Glimmer had a strange look on his face, why was he asking such strange questions?
Then Megamind noticed that he did stink of alcohol, “How much did you drink?”
“That doesn’t matter, I asked you a question.” Then he picked something up from Megamind’s bedside table, it was a blue bottle with ‘miracle elixir’ written on it. “What is this?”
Megamind shrugged, it bothered him to have someone holding that particular bottle, “It was my mother’s”
“Was she a witch?”
“No, that was a gift from a traveler. My father was gone a lot, she made friends with those who passed through, offered them a place to stay”
“Is that all she did for them?” Glimmer raised a suggestive eyebrow
Megamind grabbed the bottle, “That’s enough talk about my mother” he leaned over to put it back on the table where it belonged.
“Sorry” Glimmer sat down on his own bed, “You know, if you tried a little harder, maybe people wouldn’t be so put off by you”
“What exactly do you mean by that?” First he was insulting his mother, now his appearance … he guessed he shouldn’t be too surprised though.
“You know, if you weren’t all … black and … high collared … and…”
Megamind looked down at his outfit then back up at Glimmer, “Not everybody has the complexion for a variety of colors”
“What about white … or gold? Those go with everything, right? You should try them; they should make you more … approachable”
“Why do you care if I’m approachable?”
“Just trying to help” then he lied down on his bed.
Megamind stood up and walked over to the bathroom mirror, could a different outfit really make that much of a difference? Could white or gold be the answer to all his problems? Was that really all it was?
When Minion returned to the room, Megamind had him make a new suit of white and gold, hoping that it would indeed make him more approachable. Maybe these colors would stop those horrible rumors; maybe people would stop thinking of him as wicked.

Megamind was wearing his new suit as he walked through the halls on his way to the biology class. His suit was white and gold, with a little fringe on the sleeves and no raised collar, even though he really wanted one. He kept touching his neck as though that made up for the absence of a popped collar.
There was a new biology teacher who had shown that he was very much against Animal rights. Megamind resented the fact that the entire school was turning against Animals, it wasn’t fair, and he wanted to change it. He wanted to make it right … everything that was wrong, it needed to be right and he wished he could make it that way … he needed to make it that way.
“I knew Glimmer was studying sorcery” he heard someone say, were they talking to him? He turned to look, it was Roxanne and she was looking right at him, “but I didn’t realize he had learned how to control minds, especially one as large as yours” yes, she was definitely talking to him.
“Glimmer is not controlling my mind” where would she get such a ridiculous notion?
“Are you sure?” she reached out and plucked at a piece of the fringe coming down the side of his sleeve, “You’ve been all … Glimmerfied”
“Oh,” he looked down at his outfit, “I assure you I decided to wear this all on my own”
“You don’t have to do that, you know”
“Do what?”
“Dress like that so people will like you”
Was it that obvious? “Who says I need people to like me? I’m having a perfectly fantastic time by myself”
Her eyes narrowed, “Then what’s up with the outfit?”
He gritted his teeth, unsure of how to respond to that. Luckily he heard the teacher call his name from inside of the classroom; he pushed the door open, “I’m here” He rushed over to his seat and Roxanne followed to sit in hers
Megamind brought out his notepad and quill, but he couldn’t bring himself to write down anything the teacher was talking about. He was going on about Animals and how they should be seen and not heard, what a dreadful thought. Why were they hiring someone like this? He was just one more mindless drone, one more brainless citizen of Oz going about his way, thinking he was superior because of his … normalness, as though that was any reason for one to be considered superior!
Then the teacher did the unthinkable … he brought out a caged Lion cub, he was talking about how some device he had could burn the very speech centers of the brain. With this invention, Animals would never talk again! Megamind found himself standing up, he pushed the teacher away from the poor Lion cub, he couldn’t let that dreadful man hurt this poor innocent Lion!
He grabbed the cage and heard a noise behind him. He turned to look, Roxanne had hit the teacher over the head with her biology book and was running toward the door, “Come on, let’s go!”
He ran over to the door and followed her out into the hall, “What happened?”
“He was going to use that device of his on you.” She looked around the hall as they rushed along toward an exit, “Do you have a plan?”
“Free the Lion, get him somewhere safe” he looked down at the small cub cowering in the cage and his heart pulled out to him
“That’s it? That’s the whole plan?”
“What were you expecting?”
“I don’t know … something. You ran up and pushed a teacher down, I thought you had it figured out” she opened the door to the back exit and he walked through before she followed
“I … just got angry, no one should be treating Animals like this!” he looked over at her, “Why did you decide to help me?”
“Maybe you’re not the only one who cares about cowering Lion cubs”
He raised an eyebrow, “You do realize you’re going to get in trouble for this?”
She sighed, “Maybe I don’t care”
“So Roxanne, Princess of the Vinkus, is not as good as everyone thinks she is”
“I happen to be a very good person…”
“Then why did you decide to help the bad guy?”
“Look” she stopped walking, which made him stop as well, “If you don’t want my help … I’ll go” then she turned to head back to the school.
“Wait!” he grabbed her hand before he even knew what he was doing, suddenly he was very glad he wasn’t wearing gloves. He looked up at her face, at her beautiful blue eyes that shined so much brighter than any diamond ever could, “I do … I want your help”

A few minutes later they entered into a forest, Megamind had never been this far away from the school, “Have you ever been here before?”
“No, but I hear there a lot of wild Animals out here. Like Tigers and Lions and Bears”
He looked around, “Then it should be a good enough place for him” he looked down, “Do you think he’s old enough to be out on his own?”
“He looks like he is, he should be fine” she crossed her arms over her chest uneasily
He set the cage down on the ground and opened the door, the little Lion just stayed inside and quivered. “It’s all right, don’t be afraid … I’m not going to hurt you. I want to set you free” he reached his hand inside and started to stroke him until he relaxed. A small smile came unto Megamind’s face, this really was a nice little Lion, and eventually the Lion came out and wandered out into the forest. Megamind wished he could see him again someday, to know if everything turned out all right for him.
“We should probably head back” Roxanne suggested
“Right … shool” he stood up and turned around, leaving the cage where it was, but with the door closed and locked.
Roxanne blinked, he couldn’t pronounce school? She shook her head and then followed him back … she did think he looked good in white.
