I never really considered ANYONE as able to fill Heath's clownshoes after seeing The Dark Knight a couple of times (I enjoy it more each time I see it), but when I really sit and think about it I think Depp would be precisely the person for it. I think an immediate sequel featuring the Joker might be a little "too soon", but the whole joke with him is that he spends time in Arkham for the hell of it, until he gets bored and leaves again. A one movie span without would give folks a chance to enjoy whatever villain they bring out.

I picked up another film Christopher Nolan did that won some Toronto film fest awards but never made it big called Following and it's EXCELLENT. I really hope they bring him in for more Batman or at least something else with the potential to be huge.

Frankly, I think if it's not Nolan at the helm, they shouldn't be making more Batman movies at least not without a long gap and a reboot like before. But I think the current run is the definitive version. Its not going to get any better than this.

I also like your idea that the Joker cool his heels a bit. They could probably figure a way to show him briefly enough to make it feel real. They did it with Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow.

Though I have to ask, what was the point of showing him? Just to show that he did get nabbed in the end? That felt very gratutious and pointless even though I'd just re-watched Batman Begins a few days before seeing DK. It was so pointless and brief that I'm wondering if that's even Cillian or just a CGI face overlay or something akin to what they did for the Ice Queen in Prince Caspian.

I'll check out Following asap! I'm liking his style!
