I am leaving Google+

Sep 01, 2011 11:40

Earlier today I made what will be my last post on Google+. As I will delete that post along with all the rest later today, I decided to put a copy on LJ and DW. I was using my legal name on G+. I was unlikely to get flagged or suspended, but it's not all about me.

WASP names policy...yes, that completely sums it up. 'You've got to be exactly like us to use our application, any deviation will be punished'. I've heard of people who found themselves having their gmail account suspended due to using a name that didn't fit into Google +'s (it seems) rather narrow view of the world.

I've been considering whether to cancel my account. Firstly, because I don't use it much anyway, and secondly, because several of my friends have left, or not joined in the first place, due to not being able to use their pseudo.

This is such a shame. It could have been a great alternative to Facebook and its lack-of-privacy policy. And, as some people have said, they may well be coming for Facebook next.

I have also deleted mine. The platform looked hopeful, the policy sucks and I remain a dyed-in-the-wool lj user.

I'm seriously thinking about deleting mine. I only haven't so far because I was in a bit of a state after the riots, and didn't want to making decisions when I knew I was upset about other things.

I'm staying as Green Knight until they kick me off; but I am apalled at their policies. I also wonder what data protection agencies have to say about it (the Germans are starting to go after Facebook for exporting data to the US and keeping data for purposes other than the ones people signed up for, and - I presume - for refusing to delete accounts, all of which are illegal) - I don't know whether Google is violating market research regulations in the US, but it certainly goes against the (oh, so useful for this) voluntary code in the UK.

I deleted mine, too.

I don't think they're being evil, just thick. In that stubborn way that geeks sometimes have. So I'm not dropping their other services (for one, GMail is just too good).

That said, I'll stick with my iPhone because it's just better than Android, from all that I've seen... :-)
