In Search of a Childhood

Apr 10, 2006 09:51

After the brief trip X had made to the Nexus, he returned to his dimension pondering over the conversation he'd had with Rock. He did not believe the young man was correct or that he had ever behaved like a child. Even if he couldn't remember everything that had happened after his initial activation, surely he would have at least heard about ( Read more... )

Dr. Cain was in his office. Working on a paper. A paper about X and Zero, and there rather interesting relationship. Oh, he was keeping names and identifying details out of it, but he was still writing it. Though at least he was being professional about it.

He hadn't heard that X was angsting over his childhood, however, it was likely that X hadn't actually said anything to anyone about it.

X was not angsting about his childhood. He was still in denial about the existence of said childhood. Of course, that wasn't keeping him from going to Dr. Cain to confirm its lack of existence.

He knocked on Dr. Cain's door and waited for an answer.

"Come in!" Dr. Cain said, saving the work he was doing, before looking up to see who his visitor was.

X opened the door and stepped inside. "Hello, sir," he said politely. He closed the door, then walked over to sit in one of the extra chairs in front of Dr. Cain's desk. "Are you busy right now?"

"Right then, off you go," Dr. Cain said, smiling and waving X out a little dismissively.

As for Zero? He was off duty, yes. And right now, he was in the garage, prepping a bike to take out. He wanted to get off of the base and into the city. Unfortunately, all of the ride chasers were either being repared or in use. Which made getting one a bit harder than he would of liked.

So, thwarted in that attempt, he went to go look for X. Maybe he would have better luck with that.

The first place X checked for Zero was his bedroom, but Zero wasn't there. Neither was he in the lounge. X headed for the garage, hoping that he hadn't left the base. The mechanics would probably know if he had.

Lucky for him, he didn't even make it to the garage before he ran into Zero. "Oh, Zero! There you are!" He resisted the urge to hug Zero, an urge that had been much stronger ever since Zero had returned from the dead. "Listen, I was wondering if I could get something from you."

Zero arched an eyebrow. If he didn't know better, he would think that X was hitting on him. But then, with the way that X had been since he returned, he wouldn't be all that surprised if that was really the case.

"Yeah. I was gonna go out. But the chasers are all being repaired or are busy," Zero said, rolling his eyes. "So what do you need?"

"I was talking to Dr. Cain about the days after my initial activation," X explained. "And I'm not sure I believe everything he told me. He said you had a tape, though, so I wanted to borrow it from you." He paused, then skeptically asked, "Zero, did I really act like a child when I was first turned on?"

Actually... that was rather tempting. "Maybe," he said. "Do you know where it is on the tape? I'd rather not have to search through two weeks of... of that." He gestured at the tape, grimacing at the thought of what he'd done.

"I suppose that's true," he mused. "And no, I don't think I would have believed it without proof. I take it that also means this tape is not common knowledge?"

"It's actually right after that. You met me for the first time pretty early on," Zero said, smiling a little.

"And no, the tape isn't common knowledge. So far as I know, Dr. Cain, me, and a few of the other scientists are the only ones that ever saw it."

Well, that was a relief. X would just as soon no one saw it ever again. He eyed the thing warily, then cautiously turned the TV back on.

Dr. Cain had told X to throw the tampons away, and that was exactly what he was doing. He was literally throwing them away - 'away' being 'through the door and into the hall'. He was quite amused by this for some reason. He aimed another soggy tampon and threw it...

"Ah... that's not what I meant, X," Dr. Cain said. "I've a wonderful idea. Why don't we go take you to meet a friend of mine. He's a robot, like you," Dr. Cain said, trying to get X to stop this. "Kathy's going to kill me," he said, more to himself than to X.

Zero smirked a little. Oh yes, this would be rather interesting. Though he was still watching X's reactions.
