So, how long does it take to go from zero (well, equipment and ingredients) to a glass of something drinkable?

On the brewing to drinkable side it is a matter of about 6 weeks to having a bottle-conditioned beer ready to drink. It's taken 8 months to go from an idea to being ready to start brewing.
