Now I'm gone, you're tossing and turning in your sleep

Having some trouble sleeping... not bee related, just other stuff. Somebody commented on a Cleo vid on youtube, and it always kills me to click on it to respond. I have to stop it before it starts playing, but I get tearful and start crying anyway. A lot of cat related stuff still does that.... which is why its crazy when people suggest we get a ( Read more... )

I understand and agree with your points but there are a few that are out of cinque with things, the greatest of them being ( ... )

Thing is, I have a hard time seeing an Amendment happening without a particular sort of person being President.

With even interracial marriages only really being legal as recent as 1967, I don't actually expect the feral government or the states to really do anything to help us anytime soon. In writing this letter, I really just want to keep him honest about what he's saying. He can't claim to aim to lift us out of second class citizen status while also saying it's fine that the law treat us differently from regular citizens.

The whole "definition of marriage" thing in and of itself is, imho, moronic. It's simply a matter of people wanting to have their cake and eat it to. Is it a civil matter? Then it is an issue for the federal government. Is it a religious matter? Then legal marriage rights shouldn't exist in the first place. I believe it really is that simple.

which is why its crazy when people suggest we get a kitten.

I know what you mean. People said we should get a dog when we lost Tre. To me, it's like losing your grandmother, so someone drives you to a nursing home and suggests you get another one. Crazy.

I love the letter to Obama, you'll have to update if his camp responds.

Yeah, I know some people can do it but ... it's just too hard. I can't.

And thank you, I kinda doubt they will or if they do it'll be more double speak and spin, but hey. It makes me feel better just to feel like I did something and spoke up for myself. :P

I think he's doing the best he can while still having a good shot at being elected. But then, my philosophy has always been summed up by "take what you can get, and keep working for more." Push for everything in one sweep, and you're likely to wind up with nothing at all -- or worse, a backlash that removes what's already been gained.

Yeah, that's basically what I was trying to say towards the end of my letter. I know he can't get elected and say what I want to hear at the same time. I just want to keep him honest about what he's saying, so perhaps anything he does say to the GLBT community in the future will feel less patronizing.

For the record, I'm still planning to vote for him. :P Like you said, take what you can get and keep working for more.

I would vote for him if I could, because, regardless of the ins and outs of "civil unions" versus marriage, he actually notices queer people and is attempting to extend the hand of friendship. This means that if he becomes president, he will at least have an open ear to queer people's voices and be willing to work for further changes in the future, whereas the opposition (as I understand it) is just The Enemy.

I don't think you'll get everything fixed all in one go, so taking baby steps (ie. starting with "better than nothing" and working up) may be the only way foward. It seems like Obama might be the chap to help that process along.

You cannot legislate people's opinions.....you can only try to educate them and the President of the United States of America is not tasked with doing that.....neither is Congress. That job falls to the parents of the children growing up right now.....nobody else.

That's very true. Although I think it would be nice to have the President and/or Congress set a good example for said parents as well. So often I've seen managers and leaders set the tone for a workplace, just as parents set the tone for a household. I think it works similarly with the presidency.

I do plan on voting for him, for the record, I just don't generally get enthusiastic about politicians because... well, they're politicians. I didn't feel it appropriate to include that reason for my tentativeness in my letter though. ;P I definitely feel he's the lesser evil/best option. I just want to keep him honest about patronizing the GLBT community.

Your letter was very well written. One a side note, I applaud his stance on sex ed in the united states. This just say no BS is why over 50% of high school girls in America now are infected with STDs. Kids are going to have sex with each other, no matter what health classes say, and refusing to teach them safe sex is just stupid. Sorry I strayed from the subject n_n;

Thank you, I just sent it. Don't really expect anything of it, it just feels good to actually say those things to a politician... or to whoever reads his stuff for him, which is close enough. ;P

And yes, I totally agree with you on sex ed! I really think it's always better to discuss things with kids and be honest with them than to plug their ears and pretend the world doesn't exist. They're smarter than we give them credit for. Sex ed is very important across the board, and there's been SOO much evidence of it's importants *rants and rambles on, lol*

But, erm, yes. I agree. ^_^ I do applaud his stance on a number of things, which is actually why I bothered to write when something rubbed me wrong in his open statement.
