During adolescence, the female brain is washed in estrogen. Female teenagers, in general, experience an intense desire for social connection, which releases near-orgasmic rushes of oxytocin in the brain.

Thank you, so much David.  I finally understand why my teenage years were spent in near-orgasmic joy.

I can relate much more closely to Halberstam when she says, referencing the increasing number of gendered expectations which were forced upon her during adolescence "I personally experienced adolescence as a shrinking of my world."
