Bruises, Plagues and Parting Ways: Another HC Bingo Rec List

Mar 08, 2013 16:54

For the March hc-bingo challenge, which requires a taker to rec 15 fanworks on any or all of three prompts they receive. My prompts are:

parting ways
pandemics and epidemics
bruises

Parting Ways
1. All These Things That I’ve Done, by norah: Original. This is a very angsty, but unfortunately realistic fic which is basically trying to find the most ways to break our hearts without being melodramatic. I rarely read original works, but this one is truly fantastic. Fits prompt for multiple messy break-ups.

2. Choices, by gingerlr: Torchwood. I adore this fic to the ends of the Earth. Sexy, angsty, fluffy and then unexpectedly harsh, with lots of Janto, growing Towen, surprise baby towels, Jack's past and a rather ingenious premise. I don't want to give it away, but this fits the prompts because of multiple, shall we say, departures from the time stream.

3. Reach Out and Touch Someone, by tanarian: Torchwood with some Doctor Who. One of my favorite stories by this very prolific and infamous author. Jack leaves with the Doctor, but he calls Ianto regularly, assuring him he'll return. As Jack's absence grows ever longer, however, Ianto starts to wonder if Jack will ever come back... sweet and lovely and terribly angsty.

4. Refraction, by plotbunniesinc and leofuller: Torchwood with some Doctor Who. A new take on the prompt. An alien psychotherapy device splits Ianto into two people: one who is hopelessly in love with Jack and one who insists he can do much better! Like most fics written by this pair, Refraction is an instant favorite-list fic :)

5. Soul Deep, by Xanthe2: NCIS daemon!verse Tibbs. Isn't that enough? When 20-year-old Jethro befriends 8-year-old Tony, it's only the start of a connection that will bind them no matter how far away they get. When a serial killer begins murdering people by ripping them apart from their daemons, the connection between Tony and Gibbs becomes more important than ever. My summary really does not do this story justice, but it's absolutely brilliant.

6. 1440 hours, by mysterious advisor: Torchwood. Third in a series. In the previous fics (which I am certainly recommending as well, it's just that this one fit the prompt), Jack made a big mistake. In 1440 hours, he tries to fix it. Explaining why this fits the prompt really well would be spoilery, but it does involve Ianto going to stay in Glasgow temporarily.

7. Keeping Time, by kerryblaze: Torchwood/Doctor Who. Jack leaves Torchwood, breaking both Ianto's heart and mine every time I read it. Ianto resigns himself to living Torchwood until he dies, breaking my heart like eight more times in the process. But can he ever find a happy ending? We'll see. Will he break my heart like a hundred more times trying? Yes. I kind of hate this author by now, but the fic is amazing.

8. Avoiding Train Wrecks, by salianne: Verbotene Liebe. An unfortunately in-character take on what could have been if Christian had reacted badly the first time he and Ollie slept together. Heart-wrenching, mostly because I could absolutely see this happening in canon. Very in-character, even for Judith and Gregor. Parting ways because, well, that's what happens.

Pandemics and Epidemics

9. Burning Bright, by tanarian: Torchwood/Doctor Who. When the Burning's death toll crosses 6 million, the Tardis appears in the Hub. Ianto is not amused. Perhaps a bit out of character, but not any less brilliant for that, although with this author I'd hardly expect different.

10. A Hand to Hold, by sahiya: Doctor Who. The Doctor saves an alien world from a plague, but forgets to bring some of the cure when he leaves. Wonderful Jack/Ten friendship and pre-slash, though the sequel is higher-rated and great for different reasons ;)

11. Where Do We Go Now (But Nowhere)?, by barush: Harry Potter. One of those vaguely dissociative fics that make you feel like you only understand half of what's going on, and that stuff hurts. Lupin/Sirius working at a hospice that takes care of various unhealhty people, with emphasis on AIDS.

12. Nowhere to be found, by anr: House. Another dissociative one, vaguely creepy, but then you start to get it and it's like THE FEELZ. Basically, Cuddy goes on vacation as the world dies.

13. Exaptation, by valderys: Bones. What goes through the mind of an anthropologist after a pandemic. Infinitely in-character, painful, yet someone perfect.

Bruises

14. Perception Filter, by meatball42: Torchwood. Don't know how legit it is to rec your own stuff, but a) I really like this one, and other people seem to as well, and b) I don't have many bruises recs. Written for the prompt 'before he knows what Torchwood does, Rhys thinks Jack beats Ianto.’

15. Waiting here with you, by choccy-grl: Torchwood with some Doctor Who. This whole story is very sweet and creative, as are the few dozen fics by this author, but the part about the bruise is my favorite. You can read this chapter without the rest of the series, and it's quite heart-stabby. If you do want to read the rest, which is very nice, it's easiest if you navigate from the author's June archive.
