[Think] Step Up

Jun 22, 2009 13:44

If you're reading this and are a man, I ask you this. It's not a favor I'm asking for. Keep this in mind. It's not a challenge. Some of you will say you know this. But this goes further than just knowing. it's not just about saying "Oh, I know this!". It's about DOING. It's about lifestyle. It's about every day words and actions. It's about ( Read more... )

I used to be that timid person who would never speak up for herself. All through school, I was harrassed, intimidated, bullied, and treated like utter shyte by my classmates. I include not just the bullies, but the classmates who sat idly by and watched it happen. They're just as guilty. (And they wonder why I have never gone -- and never WILL go -- to a class reunion.)

I don't know what it was that changed when I was 19 years old, but I woke up one morning with the realization that I have as much right to live in peace and happiness as the next person. I have as much right to be free of all that bullshit as anyone else. And I went from being that timid, bullied young girl, to an independent woman who stood up for herself...and others, when the need arose ( ... )

The world does indeed. I'm sorry no one ever did for you. :(

I appreciate this post, especially in light of some things I've seen and heard recently. I posted a link in my journal here, which generated a comment I don't know if you want to respond to - but feel free to do so over there if you want. I refute the argument that's being made but at the same time I don't want to presume about your writing and your point of view.

I think it is weird how constantly people want to be patted on the back for being human.

It's not about being patted on the back for being human , it's about being recognized for being human in a world that is inherently not.

For the record. I was calm, when I wrote this post. in fact, I was quite hopeful. I asked some friends to read it before I posted it. And, really - I freely deny any claim of "male hate" as quite ludicrous and solely within your view.

And the only, single reason I am commenting to you is because you came here, to my space, to comment. To pursue this.

Read this: http://www.derailingfordummies.com/

This is what you are doing.

Reread what you typed in your original comment to tsarina very carefully. Actually, here. Let me copy paste the section that says the most about you in this discussion.

"Seriously, as a male after reading this I feel dirty for being male - and that's just as wrong as the wrongs that are described against women."This discussion? Is not about you. It's not about your hurt feelings. It's. Not. About. YOU ( ... )

I expect people to take issue with it too. A good , respectful debate is how many people come to learn.

I do not believe that abuse, rape, and killing of women is culturally condoned. I believe that is a sweeping generalization, and inaccurate. Some subcultures do condone these things - but they are not representative of the overall culture. If rape, murder, and abuse of anyone ( not just women ) were condoned we would not have laws against such things. Rapists would not be jailed ever, and abuse would be on every street corner. It's not perfect, but it's far from the universal acceptance you think exists.

I'm reading the bit on derailing - I'll comment when I'm done.

You? You are brilliant. Never stop writing these posts. They need to be said, and they need to be put into practice about 3000 years ago. So thanks.

(And, uh. Sorry for the Angry Face comment. I sometimes, you know. Get annoyed.)

Thank you, for reading.

(It's fine. tsarina is a saint - a far more tolerating person than I am and I'm leaving the discussion in her LJ as hers to moderate as she will - and I'm staying way, way out of it. delchi is now banned from posting here. Though, apparently, he doesn't get the concept of respecting someone's space.)
