Completely agreed. Especially with this: "We still say things like "don't get raped", when we should be saying "don't rape". And "don't get shot" instead of "don't shoot". This is a problem."
And yeah, while bigotry crimes are not surprising, I think people should continue to be appalled by them. Apathy and nonchalant reactions would only worsen the problem.
I agree that we should be appalled at the shit, but we also need to acknowledge the fact that we live in a sewer. Treating these events as exceptions is still problematic.
People want to pretend that we live in a world where the buildings are made of gold, people inhale peace, exhale equality, and shit rainbows. Then, when something shitty happens, it's shitty, but it's not a problem because that's just one crazy guy and the rest of us aren't like that. Or even worse, the people in deep denial try to explain why the shit is actually a rainbow, because they just can't come to terms with the idea that the world is imperfect.
(Ooh, that got a bit lengthy. Guess I didn't get all the Geraldo anger out of my system yet.)
Point being, yes the shit sucks, but rather than trying to clean up each mess we find, we need to accept that we're living in a sewer so we can start making plans to move out.
Hey man, you're preaching to the crowd. I've been saying that sane people need to move the fuck out of here before it's too late. The thing is, no one gives a shit, not really. Like you said, we want to pretend the empire will never crumble. But it will. They always do. But that doesn't mean we should completely shut ourselves out from things that are happening in the present.
My plan is to save up money and move to Vancouver. I've spent 2 years looking into it and making a plan. Then again I'm hardly sentimental and am willing to part with my family. It's not easy for others to leave like that. They prefer to believe in the hope that things here can get better. And I'm cynical as hell, but I can still understand their point of view.
I was more referring to the whole of America moving out...more in a metaphorical way. We can't make America better if we don't acknowledge that America is broken. Too many people want to think that there are just a few broken people rather than acknowledge that we live in a broken society because a broken society is much more difficult to fix.

His Trayvon Martin coverage, I'm guessing? It was pretty damn vile.
And you speak truth, as ever.
